Iberia Business Plus longhaul - definitive thread

Here are links I had bookmarked with info on IB's "Business Plus" product - thought I should throw it in the new forum.

From IB's website (from this page you can click on other Business Plus features):
Business Plus: The Seat

From the AA Forum:

This recent thread gives a good account of Business Club, with pix:
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/ameri...vice-info.html

This older thread also supplies alot of info:
IB transatlantic J / Business Plus: much better than AA!

And this:
Chicago ORD - Madrid MAD Iberia business class

And this thread from the Other Euro FF Forum contains lots:
Iberia MAD-ORD in J (Business PLUS)

Thanks for that!

I've actually moved some of those threads from American AAdvantage to this Forum, as they are more appropriate here.

There is also a thread in Trip Reports, Iberia Business Plus TXL - MAD - EZE, from June 8, 2011.

I especially enjoy Business Plus on the recently restored LAX-MAD run - this is a lengthy flight with time for wines from their bodega, a meal and a decent sleep (I am 6'3" / 193 cm and find the seat adequate). The seats are (now) fully flat bed shell seats - you are insulated from people grabbing to get up and shaking your bed - in a 2 x 2 x 2 layout on their A340-300 and -600 (the latter has the tailcam tied into the IFE system).

(Not to be confused with Business Club, offered as of October 2010 between MAD and Cairo, Lagos, Malabo, Moscow and Tel Aviv.)

By preference I fly IB to and from many European destinations - MAD is relatively easy to transit, prices are often a touch cheaper on IB (probably reflects lower airport taxes), IB A340 cabin is 2 x 2 x 2 lie-flat with greater spaciousness than AA, and "domestic" Business product is, IMO, significantly better than BA's Club Europe. Now that they fly nonstop to MAD from BOS, JFK, LAX, MIA, ORD... no-brainer, IMO.

Business Plus: Lie-flat seats with over 86.5" / 220 cm, four motors for seat movement, double lumbar pad with massage functions, rigid outer shell with grab bar, 10.4" personal screen extending from center and NR headset, phone / controlled with SMS capability, power - and the A340-600 includes live tailcam video. (You can download menus for a monthly meal in PDF format here.) The "Bodega" (wine cellar) generally offers some nice selections - you can download a PDF of the monthly sommelier's choice and wine list selections here, from May 2006 through this month's.

MAD-SCL business class seats

On IB's website they say that their business class seats extend to a bed. Is this true? Are they lay-flat? How do these seats compare to LAN or BA?

IB seat is fully flat, plenty of space, just row 6 on 340-300 are still angled ones...try to avoid this row, array is 2-2-2 like LAN, same seat style, not as private as BA for solo traveling...

When you say fully flat does it open up so it's 180 degrees flat or there is an incline?

There is no incline, at least not that's noticeable. For my taste, the IB seat is fully comparable to the LA seat, but the LA pillow and duvet are far more comfortable.

(Threads merged due to closeness of time and topic.)

The seats were inclined not so very long ago, but they removed a row if memory serves and now these are fully-flat beds except for the row Juliusgg mentions.

The seat is not the same as LAN's 767 J seat. IB has a slightly wider seat with a wider dividing armrest/table between seats. For passengers of size, especially those with "meaty" thighs, IB's longhaul J seats are more comfortable-also less cramped than BA's 777 J/Club World seats. I'll take the roomier IB seat and forgo the more luxurious duvet on LAN or BA. IB's J blanket is a bit cheap but cabins tend to be kept a bit warm during night flights so the duvets make me too hot anyway!

It's like Business Plus, a comfortable hybrid like BusinessFirst, since Iberia no longer offers First Class.

But objectively speaking, it's just Business. From the 2x2x2 configuration (typical for business class) to the number of crew members assigned to this cabin, the IberiaPlus product is a far cry from First.

Agreed. But it's also a far cry from AA's J, in the other direction, at least in terms of comfort of the seat.

Indeed - and IB doesn't offer First at all anymore.

AA is not as comfortable, is more cramped, has less useful storage (especially on the 777), does not lie flat and on some aircraft (777s) has a 2 x 3 x 2 seating - the middle seat can be a bit confining, to say the least.

OTOH, it's not the Qantas A380 Business class either. But, they don't overlap too much.

Is it comparable to say LAN's BusinessFirst hybrid product? Looks inferior just from the photos, but of course cant really tell that well.

Considering an a trip to Spain from LAX next year, and of course IB would likely be my first choice since I have OW miles galore right now.
