BUT indeed the hotel needs some $$$ for renovation.
Sorry, but I really do not understand why they selected Samsung for their 'room of the future'. I just hope we are not going to see those screens all over Europe as in Cologne, the image is lacking sharpness, especially the hotel channel, there is no HD, there is no computer connection, no headset connection...and the channel selection is very poor.
Appreciate the info
Still in the middle here I am actually thinking of touring both properties

What about bed comfort better or worse then the grand bed?
I am not a fan of Samsung and I purchased one a few years ago I am sorry to say
The LG sets are very good at Hyatt Place and at other properties worldwide
Phillips is even worse then my Samsung IMO

I quite agree with you.

Hyatt CDG is equipped with LG and it is much better. I can connect my pc and watch Canal +. Canal + broadcasts in high definition in Original Version or French Version. The next step is to have the choice to hear English or French as it is offered in some (non Hyatt) top properties in France. There is also Eurosport in HD

By the way, no Hyatt properties in Europe even offer Blu Ray Players in their suites. I am not happy as in Cologne they call that the 'room of the future'....
They will lose customers if they start generalizing this to all European properties. What is in Cologne in terms of screen/technology with their Samsung solution is definitively the past.

Have fun in Cologne.

Again, the HR Cologne is still a true 5 * hotel, however it is showing its age.

If you are a SPG Plat, there is a solid chance to get a suite at the Dom Hotel, if you do not use a suite upgrade, your chances of getting one for free across the river are significantly lower.

No club at the Dom Hotel, nice RC at the HR.

1000 SPG promo bonus points + Plat bonus at the Dom
1/2 FFN + 2000 G 2 bonus at the HR

Rates tend to be a little higher at the Hyatt.

Which beds are more comfortable? Hyatt or Dom?
I prefer Grand Bed or softer pillow/feather tops
The Dom has more satisfied customers and a GM that is responsive to all guest compliments and complaints
Also there are reports of the Hyatt Cologne being tired and dated
Thoughts?

We stayed for 3 nights over Christmas, using a suite upgrade (Regency Suite King).

Overall it was a very nice hotel, though I agree it is starting to look dated. We were previously at the PH Vendome in Paris, so it is hard to compare any other hotel to that one. That said, we were pleased, and attribute some of the shortcomings we found to the short/changed staff over the holiday. I'm sure it is among the very nicest of hotels in Cologne, though we didn't go into any others.

Our suite was very nice, overlooking the river and Dom from both living room and bedroom - that view is just as nice as they show on the website. And we were thrilled to find they had put a small live Christmas tree in the living room - it was a very very nice touch because we were there with our 2 kids, so Santa had a place to leave their gifts.

RC was closed for breakfast so we ate in the restaurant, which was a pretty good buffet.

RC had coffee all the time, and snacks in the afternoon and evening hors doevres and cocktails. It was a strange club - it's in the open area of the 6th floor rather than a separate room, and I found it odd that no one ever checked access to it. The evening food was not great, but it was a nice RC overall, and worked well for us.

Location is great, a quick walk over the bridge to town.

I would definitely stay there again if I was going back to Cologne.

HR Cologne does not have the Grand Bed yet, it is still an older version (the standard European Hyatt Regency bed, if that helps you...?) and comfortable, but not the Grand Bed.

Potential for a great, unique stay at the Dom is higher, as some Plat's reported great suite upgrades. Hyatt looks a bit dated, especially the colours used are simply not modern anymore and, honestly, some of the carpets are a disgrace for the chain.

The hotel was never really light, maybe except the lobby and the Regency Club, but if they want to keep European Hyatt standards, they have to renovate certain area relatively soon. But I guess, if Duesseldorf comes online, Cologne has to follow judging from the rivalry between D and C.

FFN, G2 and a nice RC are certainly in favour of the Hyatt, rates are a tad cheaper at the Dom at the moment.

Staff at the Hyatt is amazing, though.

Sauna, steam room and pool closed until Jan. 10

RC closed for breakfast until Jan. 18

Main breakfast buffet in the Glashaus restaurant a contender for best Hyatt breakfast buffet period. Rice soup and two dim sum varieties offered aside from the usual very wide variety of everything one can dream of.

Actually, more of a brunch than a breakfast buffet. ^

Regular price is Euro 29, though

On a side note, for the second time is as many weeks, I run into Justus Frantz at the RC, once in Mainz, now in Cologne, he seems to love Hyatt as well @:-)

Diamond Suite Cert. Upgrade:

Upgrade is to a Regency Suite, of which eight are available, two are on the RC floor.

Classic 75 sqm. one bedroom, one living room, 1.5 bath suite, more or less exactly twice the size of a regular room, partial rhine view.

Bath is a standard one, regular size, tub + shower cabin.

Living room includes a relatively new Nespresso machine, 2 Mies van der Rohe Barcelona lounge chairs and a comfy sofa, 37 inch Samsung LCD

Bedroom is not equipped with the Grand Bed yet, same 37 inch Samsung LCD.

Mini-bar is included and is stocked very well with quality spirits, beer, soft drinks and some crisps + chocolate.

As always, guests who booked a suite will be accompanied to their suite where all the registration documents are prepared.

Thank you for your very helpful report/update ^
I assume all rooms have the same beds?
Wonder if the mini bar is included for those who book a suite on points?
No that it really matters with the RC access I suppose.

All rooms have indeed the same beds.

The mini bar is always included when one books a suite, so I assume they do not differentiate between cash, points or cash and cert. I know that IC Hotels are differentiating between points or cash stays, but I do not think that Hyatt is that cheap...under the bottom line, we are talking about ~ Euro 20 worth of spirits, soft drinks and snacks...

On of the downsides of the RC in Cologne, there is no fridge in the RC and they offer the small 0.2l bottles of Coke products or water, so even if you take one to your room, the mini bar cannot hurt...
