I note that the points plus cash rate requires the same number of points as the straight points rate. However, it's only $50, and I could get a stay credit!

Oops or rip-off? Double your points rate at GH Berlin

Thank you for this great thread, SFOPhD!

By chance I have seen another example where their IT respectively calculation doesn't work properly.

Quoted a stay at the GH Berlin. A weekend stay at the hotel is very expensive compared to the competitors with similar service level.

But the Double your points rate beats it all.

The "Standard Rate" climbs from 219 Euro to 285 Euro just for the option "Double your points".

The "rate rules" are as follows:
"
Rate Rules

EXCLUSIVE OFFER for Hyatt Gold Passport members to book on Hyatt.com.
Earn double Hyatt Gold Passport points on your room rate and eligible incidental charges when paying the Double Your Points rate.
Must be a Hyatt Gold Passport Member and request points for the stay.
Not valid with groups/conventions and may not be combined with other promotional offers Complete terms and conditions available at hyatt.com/doubleyourpoints.com
Terms and Conditions

Cancellation of this reservation is subject to the hotel cancellation policy.

Cancel By 3pm 24 Hours Prior To Arrival"

So no additional service given, it's just the Double Your points option.

Maybe this is useful if you have a larger dinner charged to your room. But for a leisure traveller on a weekend the daily calculation is:

1.) The room rate for the identical room (no upgrade whatsoever) is rising by 66 Euro (+City Tax).
2.) For that 66 Euro you get double points on the rate of 219 Euro (less VAT) converted to US-Dollar * 5 = 921 "base points".

That said you get the 921 base points doubled and the additional points for the 66 Euro (approx. 269 points * 2) = 1,190 points.

Even if the dollar fluctuates against the Euro this 1,190 points seems to be too expensive. If you can by base points in increments of 1,000 for 24 USD.

I have yet to see a double points rate than made sense. 90% of my travel is out of pocket so I am very open to picking up additional points at an attractive price. IHG does this right.

Double Points rate on the Grand Hyatt Tokyo Presidential Suite was only about $300 more, but would have resulted in approximately 80000 additional points per night.

Thanks for the amendment, hailstorm! A great example for having to do the maths before making a reservation. Some rates can be great in one or the other property.

Another hotel just doesn't know how to calculate.

I'm able to see the same rate but it requires a AAA card.

In this case I think it's a better value to go with all points instead of points + cash.

But you wouldn't receive stay credit.

If someone has that many HGP points, they should already be lifetime Diamond. Hence, there's no need to worry about night/stay credit.

Not necessarily. They might be really good at MS...no amount of which alone would make one a Diamond.
