Is Hyatt Blocking Conservitive Websites?

Disturbing if true...

"James Varney of the Times-Picayune in New Orleans, stayed at the Hyatt Place hotel in Riverhead, NY. He tried to look at the Drudge Report, but was blocked from doing so by his hotels internet connection.

In fact, he tried looking at a number of conservative websites, including Powerline and Instapundit. They too were blocked. He then tried a number of liberal websites from Talking Points Memo to DailyKos. None of them had access problems."

I've been blocked in China from some websites, even FT on occasion. Never in the US. I'd check with whoever is providing Hyatt's Internet.

Can we please move beyond paranoia? Maybe the website just wasn't available. Maybe he entered the wrong url. Never have had any access problems during hundreds of stays.

Me too (never any problem accessing a wide variety of sites).

I have spent a good bit of time complaining to Hyatt about showing Faux News in the lounge. I never considered it to be part of the "massive right wing conspiracy" however.

That's not it because he allegedly had a problem on all conservative sites but not on liberal sites.

I discovered this obnoxious computer tic while calling up not some venomous cyberspace location but the Drudge Report. The site loaded, and then a kind of warning box like you wish would pop up repeatedly on your children's laptops filled the screen informing me it had been determined that site had some questionable content and viewing it was verboten.

The screen would go blank, and a kind of Orwellian corporate page would swim up from "Uniguest." Then back to the opening menu.

Perhaps if he looked up a 'conservative' website he may have found one.

I don't think Hyatt is blocking anything. I would imagine the owner/manager of this property may be blocking. Or he uses a service to manage his firewall blocking and they are the ones who messed up.

Ameliorating paranoia can get tricky when you're ultraconservative.

If in fact the service blocks conservative sites but not liberal sites, or vice versa, why would objecting to that be paranoia?

It's obviously not Hyatt policy, but it would need to be exposed and corrected if it's happening, even if it's only one property. No brainer.

Do you honestly believe any of this? It's a ridiculous story, starting with Varney's political comparison equating Riverhead with the Hamptons.

He should have just complained to the hotel or done some actual investigative reporting to find out if those sites were being blocked intentionally or not. If he did, it's not in Varney's story.

The entire thing is absurd.

He did complain to the hotel. He did contact Hyatt. He did contact Uniquest. None admitted to selective blocking.

No crime was committed, and the reporter didn't allege there was.

He did his job by alerting the public. Assuming the reporter didn't make up the story, why would anyone be so dismissive of it? Since making the whole thing up would be a threat to the reporter's career, his allegations should not be assumed to be absurd.

My guess is that a blacklist is set up so that guests can't access child porn etc, and that a left-leaning idiot handled this and thinks conservative websites should be blocked. Not the biggest problem in the world, but if it happened, then the person responsible should be flipping burgers, if that.
