The burger place, Tropical Burgers, was closed for renovations in the late summer, but should be open by now. I have always thought it was a decent (not great) place for a inexpensive meal. Puka Dog (also at Poipu Shopping Village) is always fun for a quick lunch (they drill a hole in a bun, fill it with tropical relishes and garlic sauce (mild, medium or hot) and stuff a Polish (or veggie dog ) into the bun), served with fresh made in front of you lemonade.
The burger place was open yesterday when we stopped in for Puka Dog.
I like the new gym setup, but was suprized it was packed at 6:30 this morning.
I can't hang out on FT all day, I think the sun is coming out.

Good to hear there are dining options within a 15-min walk, as we don't plan on renting a car for our 3-night stay in Dec. BTW, how necessary is a rental car? Any info on airport shuttle bus, hotel shuttles or public transit options? (On this trip, we mostly want to relax and unwind and don't plan on hopping from one tourist spot to another.)
There is no way I would even consider going to Kauai and not renting a car. I'm not sure about the cab fare, but it's about a 20-25 minute drive to the Poipu area.

Transportation
Several modes of transportation are available for guests when they arrive at Lihue Airport.
Taxi – Taxi phones and cabs are located curbside at baggage claims areas.
Cost: Approximate cost will be $45.00 - $50.00
Rental Car – All major companies are represented on Kauai. To pick up your car, proceed from the baggage claim area to the Rent-A-Car booths across the street from the terminal. Avis is available in the lobby of our resort.
Our concierge will be happy to assist you in making any arrangements for transportation.
I would not be without a car on Kauai; there are so many great places to visit. Even though we have been there many, many times, we never get tired of seeing the sights. Additionally, from a cost perspective, it would not make sense to me to pay the cost of cab fare both ways when you could rent a car for a few days for the same price.
Does anyone know if the day pass to the spa allows use of the outdoor pools, especially the water slide? And whether Hyatt Gold Passport gives me a discount on the $50 day use fee? Will be staying nearby next week, and would like to visit for recreation. Thanks!

The day pass to the spa does NOT give you access to the pools, with the exception of the outdoor lap pool that is in the spa area. I can't answer whether you can get a discount with Gold Passport (I would guess no, if you're not staying there). My recommendation would be to go on line and check to see what the cheapest spa service is that may be less than or close to the the normal fee (e.g., a manicure). That will get you free access to the spa for the entire day - and if you are nice and don't stay for hours and hours, you can ask them for another pass because you weren't able to stay as long as you had hoped. I have done this many times. This way, you get two visits for the price of one. It is expensive, but they are very nice there. For the waterslide, you need to give them a name and room number to get the wrist band that allows you access.
To add to what ILP said, I happened to be at the desk last night when a woman came with a slip for admission for yesterday and explained she was too pooped to stay and asked for an extension until today. She got it without pause.
Other than staying at the hotel, there's no way into the spa unless you have a treatment. IF you have diamond status, you still can't get in without the magic flower on your room passport
The rates for non-hotel guests are:
Daily - $50
5 day - $225
10 day - $400

New Resort?

Are there any new resorts being built next to this property? Or is everything time-share based?
I thought I heard a report of a new property being built on Poipu Beach, but wasn't sure if it was another residential or time share property or an actual hotel. And I was wondering what if any impact this would have on the Hyatt grounds.

Are you asking about the development that 787 referred to and provided a link to 2 posts up?
I guess the answer to your question is, it is a large High-End Condo complex.

I don't know of any hotels. There is a lot of development, however, among them:
Can any of you folks recommend a room/wing that I should request when checking in next week (Dec. 8)? I am diamond and hear that the RC is excellent at this hotel. I will be bringing two children (5 and 3) and my wife.
Also, does anyone have recommendations for children's activities (besides sitting at the pool all day which is fun, but gets old after a while).
As a diamond, you should automatically be put in the Poipu wing, which is closest to the Regency Club and spa.
However, I recently learned the hotel makes a conscious effort to put people with kids in the Shipwreck wing, which is much much closer to the pool.
We have only been put in the Poipu wing (no kids), BUT, this trip we had a family move in next door with small children. I suspect it was a request or they were also diamonds.
Depending upon where your room is in the Poipu wing, it can take 5-10 minutes to walk to the pool.

I don't think I know enough about the hotel to figure out which wing I SHOULD want to be in, Poipu or Shipwreck. Are the rooms really equal with the only difference being their distances from the pool or RC?
Also, do the diamond upgrade rooms come in suites, that is with two separate bedrooms? Should I ask for some super special type of room, i.e. the "presidential suite" or some such thing?

The rooms are equal except for the distance from the pool and Regency Club and spa. The upgrade you should expect is in room category. It is not likely you will get a suite. I managed to get one twice, but the first time I was clueless as to why and the second, I requested it because it was a special occassion. Being a frequent visitor (it was our 3rd trip in as many years) helps also. The suites I've seen (2 configurations) all have 1 bedroom and the living room does NOT have a pull out sofa. They all have adjoining rooms which would have to be paid for.
As for the distance, the regency club is around room 3030, I walked from the near end of the pool and back and the round trip took me a little over 15 mintues. All that to get some cookies. The pool is enormous and I was in the area nearest the lobby. Keep in mind the hotel zig zags and to get to the rooms near xx01 it would have been a few minutes longer.
If the pool is important to you & your family, I would ask for a room in the shipwreck wing and also mention you want to be near the pool. They may put you there anyway. Like I said, they consciously put families in shipwreck, which explains why it always seemed to me that the hotel was almost silent
I have some pictures of the room numbers and configuration of the Poipu wing.. I also have a few that I took which I need to post which might give you a good idea of how the hotel is laid out and just how spread out it is.
As for the presidential suite... well, I wouldn't hold my breath. I also found out that if people are not paying for the suites - which, believe it or not, many do, they upgrade honeymooners to them. I met 2 different couples both in suites who were on their honeymoon. They each said they were upgraded.
Kauai treats their diamonds very very well and you will not have to ask for any of your benefits. You'll just get them.
One note... the pool is very very large and on 2 levels. Some hotels are not as big as this pool. Your children just may not want to leave it - particularly the sand bottom lagoon pool almost at the edge of the ocean.
