How many people went to college in the 80s or early 90s, before identity theft and the credit bubble?...

My university would print out SS#'s to post grades (mid-terms, labs, finals, etc.) as a way to keep everyone's grade "anonymous". Funny thing is, despite having names blacked out, the lists were still posted alphabetically, not numerically, so we all figured out who was who pretty easily.

As redreeper noted if you are old enough, your SS# has been given so many times in so many compromised areas, it is hard to even wrap you brain around the situation, other than to monitor your credit and deal with any issues that arise. Of course you should take prudent measures, but your number is at risk no matter who has it.

I mean really guys.. you give your social when you call the bank, or call anywhere about your credit.. In college you had to give it out or write it on papers so much, you would have thought it was your phone number..

I understand identity theft and where you are coming from but... You put yourself at risk with every aspect of your life.

If you feel uncomfortable just dont send it and let your reservation get cancelled... but for me... I am going to enjoy my lovely hotel in paris...and worry about paying for it in a yr from now!!!

Honestly, I doubt they will do something like this. BTW, I have already called my hotel to confirm that they have my details on file...

(Don't get me wrong, I am not averse to paying taxes if required by law, I am just shocked at the way LMT is going about this promotion...)

I have a question, they are asking people to fax in the W-9 form, without asking for the reservation number. How do they match the reservation with W-9?

Are they recording all the info manually, and then send out the W-9 forms?

I dont know and I meant to call them up and ask them that....especially since I already faxed a W-9 to them without thinking about that first....

I guess ill call them tomorrow afternoon and make sure they matched it up (assuming they can by name/billing address)...

Am I clueless?

I have yet to see any form of email from them requesting me to call them. What should I do?

Just give them a call at their 1-800 number. If your stay was under $600 then its possible that you were not added to the email database for 1099s. I think i read that a few people on SD were experiencing this...

I never received emails either but I so happen to call after I saw people post.
The rep asked me if I got the email and I said no said. let her check what my hotel value was and it totaled like 1000.

I asked if I hadn't called would my reservation just be canceled out... she said.. They were going to start contacting people by phone who's numbers they have yet to receive...

Thats when she told me, whomever doesn't have there social security # in to them by Feb.20 will be canceled.

So, if you haven't called them yet, I would definitely call and see what the dollar amount is for your reservation.

Shortening reservation

I'd like to shorten my reservation by one day from 6 nights to 5 nights (checking out a day earlier). Will they allow me to modify my reservation? I will still be over the $600 tax threshold.

I was thinking about that option...

I also might not want all 7 days,
but unless it eliminates the 1099 issue,
I wouldn't ask about anything.

Just check out early as you like,
I can't imagine the hotel will object or charge anything.

I AM still trying to find out if the 1099 can be undone
if we cancel the "prize" before arrival.
Guess i will just ask when I call in my number this week.

They will not, a bunch of people on slickdeals had tried this and no go...

They told me that you could not modify the reservation at all. You can check out early, but they cannot change your reservation.

I haven't received any email and my trip is under $600. I shouldn't have to send in a 1099 if it's under $600, correct? Any other prize that I won and has been under $600 you are fine - those over $600 is where you have to send in a 1099. What about anyone else under the $600 mark?

I called up LMT as I hadn't received an email or call regarding the taxes. I was told that I was under the $600 limit and so don't need to provide them with any tax related information, guess I will enjoy my free nights at the Westin without worrying about taxes

Same here! I just called them and they said the same exact thing. they said I wasn't in the contact list for the 1099 Tax info. request. They told me to simply enjoy my stay and that I can disregard what I have been reading in the blogs.
