Just got a call at 6:45am congratulating me on winning a lastminute.com $1 room and double-checking that I received the e-mail confirmation.
Did you give them your Australian address while booking or an US address? When Did you book? I already booked in the first week and did not get a call.
Looking forward to hearing from you RedSox. I hope you have a warm destination--would hate to think of you sleeping under a blue plastic tarp in Anchorage or Toronto if this is bogus.
Just got an email regarding 1099s for the world for a dollar promotion. If you have not got it, yet I am sure you will get it shortly...

Hi, been a lurker throughout the whole LMT thing, was lucky enough to have successfully completed a booking...and yes...received the 1099 tax, ss# request email a few minutes ago. Sigh. I hate to complain about winning a free hotel stay, but it really seems as if LMT should have communicated the T&C better initially.
Did you give them your Australian address while booking or an US address? When Did you book? I already booked in the first week and did not get a call.
I booked a room on the 2nd or 3rd day of the promotion and have not received a call either, but did receive the confirmation email and the 1099 information request.
OK, who is a tax lawyer here among us?
The whole event was "The World for $1." The ads all say 15,000 hotels for $1 per night. Then the fine print later on says that we "win" and that there is no hotel charge at all.
So who gets to determine whether it was a great hotel rate of $1 per night, or if we won a sweepstakes and saved $300 per night for 7 nights = $2100 taxable "winnings"?
There are lots of us in this situation, and I doubt that any lawyer wants to share their legal thoughts, but I feel better for venting.
I just did some Google searching and stumbled across this thread.
Major alarm bells are going off on my head right now. I received this e-mail too after booking a hotel room in Atlantic City a few weeks ago.
My alarm bells:
1) Nowhere on their web site do they list this tax issue. I have made PDF copies of their FAQ, privacy page, and user agreement. Only mention of taxes are related to rental cars and the fact that most fairs include all appicable taxes.
2) The link in this e-mail to supply this info goes to this web site: http://66.192.128.13/survey.aspx?id=(removed unique ID #). For those of you who aren't computer savvy, that is a VERY fishy web site link. #1, it is in IP address form instead of a domain name, which is a classic sign of someone committing fraud since there is no way to verify that it is a legit web site. #2 is the page is not encrypted!!!!
3) On this page, they ask for your Social Security # among other personal information.
I tell you right now, any company who sends me to a web site with a fishy web site address, no encryption, and asks for my social security number? That is scaring the daylights out of me.
DO NOT fill out this info until we can get more information on what the heck is going on here.
I'm not a lawyer or tax guy for that matter but this is not surprising at all. As soon as I saw we didn't pay $1 and it was free, I knew we were going to get a 1099. I think its a bunch of crap since they advertised it as $1 rooms (in which case I don't think we'd get a 1099 BUT I am not sure about that). Regardless of all this, its still a great deal for me. For others, it might not really be much of a deal considering I've read in this thread that a) some of the LMT rates are higher than the hotel's own website (sometimes like 25% or 30% higher I've read b)some are in a very high tax bracket.
Hey everyone, this has to be a scam. Check the link on the tax e-mail. It brings you to a site that uses its IP address as the site address instead of a domain name. It isn't encrypted. AND it asks for your social security # among other personal info. All classic signs of fraud and a phishing.
It is e-commerce security 101. You give that info, unencrypted, to a shady web site address that doesn't remotely look legit, and they can open accounts under your name!!!
DO NOT fill that form out! We need to confirm that they sent this to us or they haven't been hacked. Even then, I have no confidence in them now if they failed e-commerce security 101.
