Hey Jan,
Thanks for the email. Just sign up, pick a hotel, pick one closest to $50 in price, go to the billing page, select "use member dollars" and then pay the balance (it will appear in a small box).

I can't believe people like that even exist.
I agree too!!!!!!
It took me whole day to explain people in my team what they can do with this coupon. I work in singapore so we have a lot of possibilities for cheap holidays in the area (thailand , indonesia, malaysia)
you can even find 100's of hotels under 50usd per night within 200km
but none of them booked anything
i had to book a night in "singapore prostititon district" and check in with a voucher to prove it to my roommates that it actually works......
for me this marketing strategy of giving away 50USD also doesnt make sense but think of how many dumb people you have in your office.
I m sure someone could be capable of coming up with such campaign :P

Definitely not good for the economy (well, the Australian one). But, good for my personal economy!

But you can now see HOW they came up with this promo. Just like "everybody's friends," they didn't think of the logical way to exploit the promo. It just doesn't occur to most people! Flyertalkers are "weird."
I also agree with the comment about "hotel snobbery." I'm no hotel snob either, but priceline, the various frequent stay programs and various "crazy deals" generally keeps me out of Comfort Inns and Ramadas. I'm not going to book a 2 star motel that gets bad reviews on tripadvisor at any price.
And that's why this promo is somewhat self-limiting.

lol, unlike you, I'll sleep anywhere, at anytime. I'm cheap by no means, but hotels are something I've never wanted to pay for, ever. I'd rather rip up my money than give $100 to sleep in a strange room for a couple of hours. The cheaper the better, just get me through the night. That's why I started the BRG Blog, I wanted to share what I found, and also have access to what others were finding to increase the amounts of free rooms I was getting. On the days I can't get a free room, I'll sleep in the airport or camp out at Denny's.
But hey, I'm 26, and still quite easygoing. I'm sure that will fade eventually.

Probably. Especially as a Flyertalker. We tend to get accustomed -- perhaps too accustomed -- to our perks. Like you'll find plenty of folks here who are appalled by the idea of flying coach overseas. (I almost always fly coach because I have no one to pay for my FC ticket, and the programs I belong to require twice as many miles for biz class, which isn't worth it to me).
But with the well-known flyertalk strategies, it's easy to upgrade your hotel from 2 star to 4 star these days. I'd say that's where the real value is. This promo is a little unusual in that the deep value is in the 2 star hotels. A bit of an attitude adjustment.

Ya, I guess I'm just easy to please. I mean, sure first class is comfortable, but I don't find coach bad at all. I still squirm in my seat just as much in F than I do in coach. I hate flying, I hate sitting in one place, movie or no movie. The only thing I like better about F is free booze (bailey's and coffee, for me, and a beer for the meal, usually), and the meal itself (other than the horrendous options sometimes served on AA). Other than that, I'm content anywhere. I mean, sure I'll take F if the upgrade is free, but I can't see myself ever redeeming miles or paying a copay in order to have a few hours of pseudo-luxury :P
But again, when I am 40 and the bones are brittle, I might feel otherwise!

Best Western Papago Inn in Scottsdale, AZ is as low as free now through December 23, 2008 w/ $50 off. Some weeknights are as low as $40 (before member dollars) and even $53 (before member dollars) on weekends. Gets excellent reviews on Expedia, Travelocity and Tripadvisor (#12 in Scottsdale).
BUT click through and you see this on the registration page:
- Special offer! Join now and get $50 Member dollars off your next booking for Virgin Blue users *
- *20 Member Dollars is equivalent to $USD 20. As this is a special promotion 20 Member Dollars will expire on 1 March 2008, otherwise all of the standard terms and conditions apply.
(My bolding.)
An inconsistency.

Reason: typo
http://www.hotelclub.com.au/VIRGIN/ is now dead too. Although it says "Join now and get $50 Member dollars off your next booking for Virgin Blue users *", on the bottom of the page they've changed it to "*20 Member Dollars is equivalent to $USD 20. As this is a special promotion 20 Member Dollars will expire on 1 March 2008"
Luckily I've already booked three nights in Singapore. One night at the Crowne Plaza Changi Airport and two nights at the Pan Pacific Singapore, so it wasn't exactly cheap even after the discounts.

I noticed this too - but if you sign up, there is $50 credit in the account.
Unlike, US50, which now indeed only gives you $20
