Has anyone eaten here? Are the steaks as good as Dallas... and would you recommend the place? Which location is better?
I've got a bet going on that 'I know a steak place better'n yours' - and I don't wanna lose this bet.
FWI, I'm not getting good vibes from the HKG rest. as they are not answering e-mails.
I can't give you a review of Ruth's Chris steakhouse in Hong Kong....but as far as your bet is concerned, there was a mini-debate about this in the San Francisco Forum a few weeks ago, between Morton's Steakhouse, Harris' Steakhouse, and Ruth's Chris Steakhouse, and which one is best across their various locations in the U.S.
As to your question, though, my guess would be: 1) how could a Hong Kong steak be "as good as Dallas" , and 2) when in Hong Kong, the home (along with Guangzhou) of the greatest, most varied, most subtle, and most refined cuisine ever known to mankind....who wants a Ruth's Chris steak ?

As steakhouses go, it's pretty good, but I don't know how it compares with other ones around. The big thing is that Ruth Chris' is pretty darned expensive in HK. I'd only do it if I was on expense account and if the guest in question didn't like Chinese food (which is world class here - for that type of money, I could order a lot of Chinese food, including the high priced stuff like seafood). Just my opinion.

The HKG Morton's claims that its steaks are flown-in from the United States (at least the menu in the Sheraton lobby by the elevator to the Towers lounge says so).

I have never eaten there -- and never will as long as there is chinese food served in HKG -- but often stay at the Towers and the concierge there claims that it is not just the best steak but also the best "american" food in HKG. Of course they would say that (I'm sure they are well taken care of for referals). Still it is credible and would be my choice for steak.
Having eaten at both (Morton's more than Ruth's Chris) I agree with thursday. Morton's to me is far better in ambience than Ruth's Chris (the Lippo Centre one being the one I've been to), and better in quality of food too. Having said that, if it's my money I'm spending then the price of Morton's makes it only for very special occasions indeed. My regular steakhouse in HK (insofar as I have one - say 4 or 5 times a year) is Wooloomooloo, which is about half the price of Morton's, and, I would say, 80% of the quality (albeit with Australian steaks rather than American). The new branch in Wanchai is a nice environment with a roof top bar and pretty good views as well. Ruth's Chris to me is no better than Wooloomooloo, and a lot more expensive.
Any good steak in HK is from the US or Australia - even the supermarkets label their steak as to where it comes from. And they are not prohibitively expensive.
I am not on a big expense account, but know Ruth's Chris can get very expensive very quickly. I would have to agree with Christep, a excellent restaurant like Wooloomooloo is cheaper and has a better feel than either of the ones that have been mentioned, but deliver just as good food, if not better.
I don't want to pay HK$1,000 for a steak and still have to order sides.
And the rooftop bar at Wooloomooloo Wan Chai is excellent - great view, but not super-expensive drinks. It is a secret that I don't want too many people to know about!

I know what you mean. The Chinese food in HK is the best in the world (Taipei is close, even better for certain dishes). But sometimes after 8 or 10 days in China (where I generally eat Chinese 3 meals per day), when I get to HK I just need some "comfort food". For me that is Dan Ryan's for ribs. Maybe it is just because I am in the mood, but I think these are among the best ribs I have had anywhere.
I have never eaten in the good steak houses in HK. Once I have my ribs I feel better and go back to Chinese.
I'm a big Ruth Chris fan but was completely disappointed with the meal at the HK restaurant (this was a couple of years ago during the whole mad cow thing). The beef, I believe was from New Zealand. It was terrible. The steak was really stringy and didn't taste good, at all.
