Extra traveling time TO HKIA if by road

Apparently, today is the first day that the Transport department implements toll collection on both ways (heading to and heading back downtown from) HKIA. There is a lack of toll booth capacity on the newly implemented side (heading to HKIA) and there has been severe congestion as a result:

http://www.td.gov.hk/en/special_news/spnews.htm
Due to heavy traffic, Lantau Link Airport bound is very congested. Intermittent closure has been implemented at Tai Lam Tunnel (Kowloon bound). Members of the public are advised to use public transport (including non road based public transport) to Lantau Island and the Airport. Early planning of journeys to allow more travelling time is also advised to avoid unexpected delay.

Apparently, only 3 of the ~10 booths were operating this morning

Actually they started this on Sunday and it worked fine. The only problem was that the toll booths didn't have enough change (for both side, the collector asked if I can provide change to them because they ran out of $5 or combination of $5 coins).

There were only 7 or 8 booths going to the Lantau side to begin with, they closed out the middle sections for construction since there were no booths there previously.

I wondered why they didn't accept Octopus when they started implementing that for other tunnel booths. I'm also surprised they didn't allocate more booths for the Lantau-bound traffic.

This is the kind of thing that's going to play in the news for months as evidence of the incompetence of the HK government...

Today fine again. 8 lanes in operation and TD repositioned some of the traffic barriers to be less annoying:

Why do they collect the toll in both directions? It's much more efficient to charge twice as much in one direction.

New road links to Zhuhai/Macau and Tuen Mun will soon open, hence the Lantau Link will no longer be the sole way in and out of Lantau island very soon.

Nah, typical of HK media this news barely lasted 24 hours especially when things were back to normal the next day. Heck even the politicians couldn't milk much out of this.

Bumped off the news by HATO which is a Severe Typhoon now with warning signal #10 issued (the highest).

But the above 2 constructions is years away from finish ... I simply cannot understand why the urgency to change so fast with all the support still missing.

The Tuen Mun CLK section will open sooner than the rest of the project as a second link off Lantau to the rest of Hong Kong is badly needed.

Remember the collision into the bridge support pier incident?
