Best place for XLB

Will be back in town later this fall in midst of hairy crab season. Our go-to places for XLB are Ye Shanghai (best XLB I've had) and Crystal Jade (XLB just ok, but really love their seasonal hairy crab XLB). I've been to Din Tai Fong, but Ye Shanghai is on another level imho. Problem with Ye Shanghai is that, on surface their prices seem reasonable, but then it adds up fast. I believe ~$200 only gets you 12 or so pieces of regular XLB, and last time I only got to eat one piece because even my little kids devoured those devils so fast.

Are there any places even better than the above, for either regular XLB or crab XLB? Requirements: 1).near/along Tsuen Wan line; 2).no more expensive than Ye Shanghai; 3).clean setting and not too local of a place.

It does not have to be a Shanghaighese restaurant. It can be a Cantonese / dim sum place that serves amazing XLB. Our preference for XLB is flavorful with lots of juice.

Thanks. That's a funny name for a restaurant.
Openrice's grading distribution on this place is not very good, though. Only 35 out of 61 gave it . Are they really awesome? I am looking for mind-blowing XLB (but not super-expensive), as good as or better than Ye Shanghai.

In that case, you should consider coming to Shanghai.

Meh... stick with DTF in HK. Go to Shanghai for the real thing. I've had better xlb in Shanghai for breakfast from street side vendors than from any restaurant.

Duck in BJ
Satay in SG

OK, I've had XLB in PVG and Duck in PEK. Will hit Dim Sum & noodles in HKG and satay in SIN in Nov/Dec. Will also be in BKK & SGN that trip (cruise) so what are your recommendations? (actually, thinking of doing a breakfast pho tour in SGN; we won't have time to do a food tour in BKK or HKG and I'm still searching for SIN - problem is there are too many choices in SIN )

Only issue I have with food tour is my limited hourly intake capacity.

BKK - deep fried insects from street cart vendors?

My rule of thumb: follow your nose and look for lineup of locals.

Personally I think XLB at Ye Shanghai (Marco Polo) is better than DTF's. That's the best I've ever had, although my only XLB experiences are in HKG, Jpn, Vancouver, US and TPE airport. You think DTF is better than Ye Shanghai?

My friends and I call that the lemming theory and it's worked well for most of my travel experiences. Failed me in Prague one late night, but otherwise, mostly good!

It's how hawker stalls in Singapore live and die. There are many many examples of the same thing being sold at adjacent stalls, one will have a line and one wont.

Following is our XLB master thread:

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/china...gs-thread.html

A few more notes:
-street side XLB is increasingly hard to find in Shanghai, let alone HK
-I do see it in Shenzhen on occasion, but the quality tends to be really bad
-DTF honestly is pretty good, and certainly beats waiting in line for an hour+ in order to go somewhere more local
-Jardin de Jade's (Shanghai) XLB seriously impressed me several months ago; according to Google, they also have a branch in HK
-unlike wontons or jiaozi, XLB is pretty difficult to make
