octopus card refunds and the airport express
Hi
Is it possible to get a refund on an octopus card after passing through the platform barriers at hong kong station (think that's the right name for the one on the island) but before boarding the train?
There's a promo on for kids travel over the summer which means they should use their cards...
Thanks
Tony

Ok thanks.
It was just to save going down to arrivals when we got to the airport.
(There's no facility for refunds in departures, right?)

No, but you're simply going slightly down to arrivals, and then take escalators/elevators back up to departure. Doesn't add much walking or time (unless there's a line for refund).

I assume the adults are using group tickets while kids ride for free, right? If the purpose is to minimize amount of cash you have in the end, you probably should refund the adult cards at HK Station and use that cash towards the group tickets. Then refund the kids' cards at airport.

I thought about that but if only I had read your post earlier. Massive snaking queue at the hkg desk. Ridiculously long. Anyway now in Borneo and the proud owner of about hkd400 on octopus cards. Grrrr...

Probably too late for OP, there are 2 Customer Service Counter at Departure Level (one on T1-side, another on T2-side) of the Airport Express arrival at HKIA. The line there is normally short one
For Arrival, there are 3 Customer Service Counter before the train which normally has a long line

Tony, if you are based in Europe, mail me those cards, I can get the refund and pay you from my French or London HSBC account. PM me. If you plan to come back to HK do it yourself next time. The balance doesn't expire.

I meant to mention before, you can only get those Octopus cards refunded if you have possessed them for a certain period of time. Can't remember what it is, but I did end up doing a fiddle doddle with a friend living in Hong Kong when I was there some 3 weeks ago.

You can get them refunded at any time, but if you refund them within 90 days of the date of purchase then there is a charge of HK$9. Take care not to leave more than $500 on a card that you want refunded - that can't be done immediately in cash.

... or just continue to spend down the balance on that trip.
The balance doesn't expire.
