Friday evening: Shenzhen Bay or Lok Ma Chau for border crossing into Shenzhen?

It has been about a year since I used either crossing. Thought I check with local experts for the lastest.

I will be arriving HKG on a Friday evening. Plan to take an airport coach from HKG to either border crossing, and eventually taxi to JW Marriott Shenzhen (in Futian).

Which crossing would you recommend, and expect long lines (US passport holder)?

Thanks in advance.

I don't have answers for you, but "Lok Ma Chau crossing" usually means to HKers as the border from the East Rail Lok Ma Chau Station (also accessible by taxis and B1 bus, but NOT coaches from airport) over to the Shenzhen Metro Line 4's Futian Checkpoint/Kou'an Station.

The one you get to by coach, and what you are asking, is generally referred to as "Huanggang crossing".

Lok Ma Chau can mean two things:

- the Control Point (vehicle crossing) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lok_Ma_Chau_Control_Point
- the MTR station http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lok_Ma_Chau_Station

They correspond to Huanggang and Futian Control Point respectively.

You can take just one of these http://ctsbus.hkcts.com/routes/air/air-index.html - I haven't done this myself - but I think any bus passing Huanggang will have an option to let you off (you simply tell the driver you won't get back on and join the taxi queue in Huanggang).

Sorry I haven't found an HKG airport bus going straight to JW Marriott SZ. So the Huanggang cab rank is your best bet. However it may be a wait during peak hour.

HKG->Shenzhen Bay: CTS - every :00 & :30. EE - every :10 & :40. Go Go - every :20 & :50. 7a to 10:20p. Also $100.

We should really think about consolidating some of these Shenzhen border threads because the discussions are quite similar, but I must admit that I'm guilty of starting more than one myself.

With respect to the instant case, all other things being equal, Shenzhen Bay is better than Huanggang because it consists of a single building (as opposed to two structures 1000 meters apart that are not walkable). Wait times can be brutal at both, though I did make it through the former in less than 5 minutes last Friday night at 9p. Huanggang also doesn't have eChannel for passports, but the silver lining that the foreigner line there tends to be short.

The taxi scene on the SZ side is usually complete hell at all checkpoints... Shekou less so because it is more relaxed, but there is still a perpetual shortage of taxis. These days, I usually call one of my local 黑车 as I approach the bridge, and have them pick me up. Getting 黑车on the fly doesn't work if the police are out on patrol (about 25% of the time), and they will always charge more than someone that you arrange yourself.

Posts: 73 Yes, after landing in Hong Kong just follow the sign to the Ferry to Shenzhen Shekou, then take a taxi to JW Marriott very easy.

(NOTE: At this point, there can be many people at their respective ticket desks try to solicit you to go with them. I usually ask which is the earliest to leave and hop onto it. After you clear custom/immig, you are in Futian. Take a 15-min taxi ride rom here to the JW. Like many had said, the taxi driver may not know where the JW is, so it is a good idea to show him the address in Chinese. There are ATMs around, in case you need RMB. I recall I got cash last time from a store outside the terminal bldg, near the cabs stand.

Thank you everyone for taking the time to share. I really appreciate it.

Is Friday evening/night traffic from HK to SZ particularly heavy (via Lok Ma Chau or SZ Bay)? What do you think I ought to budget the time for border crossing? (was thinking about a late dinner appointment).
