Hong Kong/China in November 4 for 5 days, budget lodging
Please recommend a cheap hotel that is clean. Our budget is $60 to $100.00 a night for a double room (2 women). What is the best area to stay?
This is our first trip to Asia. We would like to explore China and we are hoping to across the border while there.
We are considering the following:
Holiday Inn Express Hong Kong Soho
Cosmo Hotel Hong Kong
Ibis Hong Kong Central & Sheung Wan
Hotel Rainbow Hong Kong
Holiday Inn Express Hong Kong Kowloon East
Silka West Kowloon Hotel
B P International Hotel 4 Star Hotel

Thanks

Stick with the bigger names in good location, which means HIE Soho or the Ibis Sheung Wan. The BP was okay, but sits over a mainland coach terminus, with lots of Mainland Chinese groups. No idea about condition of the Rainbow, though it's convenient.

Another question, is it cheaper to stay in China - we plan to spend a few days there - or should we do the crossing daily?
Thanks again

By China, I assume you mean across the border, which would be Shenzhen? The train service is efficient but you have border crossings etc. to consider, at least 1.5 hrs each way: http://gohongkong.about.com/od/trave...trtosubway.htm

I have stayed at Hotel Kapok in Beijing. Very safe. Clean. Friendly staff.

Yes, Shenzhen or surrounding cities. I will have to research if Canadians need visa to enter China.
Are the hotels that I listed the best ones to stay or will you recommend others?:
Holiday Inn Express Hong Kong Soho
Cosmo Hotel Hong Kong
Ibis Hong Kong Central & Sheung Wan
Hotel Rainbow Hong Kong
Holiday Inn Express Hong Kong Kowloon East
Silka West Kowloon Hotel
B P International Hotel 4 Star Hotel
Thanks again.

HK hotels are not cheap, literally thousands of visitors from mainland streaming into town daily for 3-7 day visits. There is no longer the high or low seasons, it's packed all the time. For $100 or less, expect a small but clean room, bathing facilities, and maybe a coffee shop.
Maybe others can chime in...is NT an option for cheaper hotels?

I'm pretty sure Canadians are currently eligible for Shenzhen border visas, which cost around $200HK on the spot (Luohu, Huanggang, Shenzhen Bay, Shekou).
As for her hotel list, I actually like the Cosmo and Cosmopolitan, and both can be had for less than $100/night. The same goes for the Charterhouse. The HIX Soho isn't quite as nice IMO, but the location is good. The Ibis is the only other candidate that I would possibly consider.

Take a look at my recent thread if you like. I am also traveling with a female friend. We wanted to be sure of getting two beds (a smallish double bed would have been quite awful), and when looking through the various options, we saw a lot of "double" rooms that basically had a smallish double bed, a miniscule bathroom, and almost zero space for suitcases. After being alerted on this forum and doing some reading, we also wanted a place that was not a fire trap. You may come up with some better deals during your stay -- our stay seems to perhaps be at a more expensive time. Take a look at these options:
http://www.yha.org.hk/eng/meihohouse/ (We found a better deal by using a Travelocity discount code for a twin room. The twin room is relatively spacious and the place is modernized with good facilities. Look at the reviews. That said, we haven't stayed here yet.)
http://www.ascensionhousehk.com/index.html (Not sure how convenient the location is, but it seems doable.)
Other more remote YHA options.

Shenzhen (Luo Hu district in this case) has plenty of hotels within the OP's budget. Much more space too, though the walls are equally thin...
Though, passing back and forth from Luo Hu border crossing to the usual tourist spots of HK would certainly become a chore (additionally, this particular crossing isn't 24 hours).
