When should I go to HKG for iPhone5 purchase?

I am interested to buy a SIM free iPhone5 in HKG. When is the best timing to go and buy one or some? I will fly from Tokyo.

Not anytime soon. Typically, retailers in HK hold hot new products like this back and charge huge premiums for them for months after they come out.

A few months.

The phone will *likely* be sold by the Apple stores via their 'lottery' system--people register the day before to buy a phone and then, if they win the lottery, are told to show up the next day and present their HK ID and buy the phone. It will be a few months before the Apple Store has enough stock to handle walk-in customers.

I wouldn't be surprised if the folks in Mongkok (Sincere Center) have iPhone 5s on the grey market (i.e. much more expensive). However: please note there are 3 flavors of iPhone given the fragmentation that exists in LTE frequencies around the world. You'll have to make sure the one they are marketing to you is compatible with your carrier back in Japan.

Thanks, everyone.

The model variations can now be found on Wikipedia.

It's hard for me to choose what is best for docomo Japan LTE networks.

A few months sounds very long.

According to appleinsider.com: "The iPhone 5 will debut in 9 countries for its Sept. 21 debut: the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Germany, France, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore."

Surprisingly, based on what is on that Wiki page, the CDMA model would be best worldwide, but that model is likely only available (locked) from Verizon in the USA. Possibly in Korea and some parts of China too but also locked.

Someone updated the Wiki table. Now it is easier to understand. CDMA model looks more attractive. Looks like iPhone 4(not 4S) had CDMA models. Did Apple sell CDMA iPhone4 in HKG? How is Hutch doing in HKG now?

Richard, CDMA model is available from "au", a Japanese telecom brand, too, though locked.

Wirelessly posted (iPhone 4: Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.3.6; en-us; GT-I9210 Build/GINGERBREAD) AppleWebKit/533.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/533.1)

There is no cdma model of iPhone 4 /4ever in HK as the only licence of cdma 2000 goes to over and they don't really offer service there other than international roaming.

BTW I tried using iPhone 4 on DoCoMo, softbank and au and Docomo is certainly best (you need to subscribe the Xi plan though)

This will help determine which model fits you best....read all 3 articles and you will better understand the differences etc.:
LTE bands on the iPhone 5- impact on SIM swapping travellers?
