HKG transit question

Hi,

First time traveling to Asia - and on the return we are doing BKK-HKG-JFK, leaving BKK in the afternoon with the overnight layover in HKG. Prob a really stupid question...was going to have dinner/spend a night in a HKG hotel - but will I have seperate tickets for the two flights and be able to leave the airport overnight, if so what about baggage, customs, etc.

Any tips helpful. Thanks!

This is not CX-related. I am moving this to the HKG forum.

Sorry - as the flights are operated by CX I thought it would be the right place.

You will have separate boarding passes of course, but you are free to leave the airport and do whatever you want in Hong Kong. When you check in at BKK, if you are checking a bag you can have them check it all the way to NY, or only to HKG, your choice. If you check it to HKG just pick it up at baggage claim and head off to the city. If it is checked all the way to JFK then they will store it overnight. I'd pick up my bags at HKG to minimize the chance of theft.

Immigration and baggage claim is usually a breeze at HKG. Then there is an easy to use train to the city if you want.

I know it is boring, but I prefer the HKG Airport Regal hotel myself. It's attached to the airport just outside baggage claim / customs. You can stay there and still take a train downtown for exploration. It's also great for early flights since the train does take a while.
