Okay - there's a little more to that.

I just arrived into Honolulu and staying at the Waikiki Hawaiian Village. In my welcome kit, there is a voucher that states that to earn this 30,000 point bonus, I haveto attend a sales presentation of the nearby newly refurbished Hilton Grand Vacations Club at the hilton Hawaiian Village. No obliation at all.

So having the afternoon free. I attended one of these sessions. It's all about time-share.

Then after the 90 minute presentation, I get 30,000 points into my HH account.

Oh , if you want to purchase the units (as a time share), HGVC will also credit in addition to the 30K for attending the sales presentation, 100K into your account. Plus you can pay for your purchase on a creditcard - more HH points!

I haven't decided if I want to buy one yet. But the 30K will come in handy.

I also got the same voucher last month, but also had one for 50k for being Diamond. I did think about sitting thru 90mins of timeshare talk, but decide that having travelled half way around the world that my vacation time was just too valuable.

They also had vouchers for 100 usd to spend in the shops / resturants.

I have attended many time share pitches. I am always out in less than an hour. The trick is I bring my 3 1/2 and 6 year old daughters. They can trash any room in no time at all ! (if we don't keep them in line). They are usually glad to get rid of us fast. I also do the math on the price of the units; i.e. $20,000 a week times 52 equals $1,040,000 ! I then ask the salesperson if they think the units are worth over a million. This usually takes the wind out of their pitch, and the know they are not going to make a sale. When you factor in the interest and time vaule of money, the total cost skyrockets !

I am at the Hilton Hawaiian Village and sat through the Hilton Grand Vacations Club pitch in order to get 20,000 HiltonHHonors points. My session was over 2 hours. The condo units are nice, though and I really thought it was worth it to get the points.

does your spouse have to be with you to get the points?????

The promotional material said yes, if you're married, your spouse must attend the presentation with you to earn the points. Also they look for household incomes of at least $65,000 (although there isn't any way for them to check that if you claim it and it isn't true). If you don't want/need the points, you can instead get $100 in "Hilton Hawaiian Dollars" to spend on site.

If anyone is near Vancouver, Canada, Whistler has great offers (however, I don't know of any with Hilton).

I got one of those promotional offers for the Orlando property. I will be in Hawaii, however, in the next couple of weeks and would grudgingly be willing to trade two hours of my time for 30,000 points. Got to get out of the sun sometime.

How did you get hooked up with that offer? Was it just presented to you at check in or did you preregister?

One of the other ways to get out of a presentation early (rather than having your kids trash the room!) is to tell the salesperson that you know about resales and how you can buy a Hilton week that way for under $5000 (we paid $2000 for an excellent non-Hilton week, bought Hilton from Hilton). If yours salesperson isn't a real sales weasel, they'll get the point that you're not going to be buying & make the tour brief..(but if you get a jerk who thinks they'll make a sale at any cost, I've seen them go into high gear at that point..it works in most cases though)..

I found Grand Vacation Clubs only in Las Vegas, Hawaii, Florida and Los Cabos, Mexico. I HATE time-share! But now after all of these tips on ways to blow the time share presentation off quickly/reduce their interest in me, maybe I will try the one in Hawaii in April or make a mileage/hotel point run to Vegas soon JUST to attend timeshare for points??? I must be crazy.

Does anyone know if it would work: how about a "time-share run"? If you can get 30,000 points per time-share and there are over 20 properties, most in Florida ... if I went to Florida and stayed in a different property each night just to see the time-share pitches to get the points ... does anyone know if this would work? Or is the 30,000 HHonors Points awards just a one-time thing? :-)

I don't know if it will work with Hilton but I do know that Marriott will only let you collect points for time share presentations once every 6 months. If I do the time share bit more than once in the 6 months period, I choose the cash, or whatever the alternate "prize" is. Hope that helps.

Thanks MrNick, here is another question: do you know if you have to be actually staying in the hotel in question to be eligible for the time share? In April I will be at the Hilton Hawaiian Village which I don't think has timeshare and wonder if I make a visit to a hotel that does. I also know that there is a Marriott in Kauai I stayed at once before that had time share and I could drop in on them too earning two time share bonuses at once although with two different chains ... what kind of point rewards do you get from Marriott? Thanks!

I just came from the Hilton Hawaiian Village a couple of weeks ago. There is indeed a Grand Vacations Club on the property (the Lagoon Tower). They were offering 20,000 points (down from 30,000, I'm told) if you attended their presentation, plus 100,000 more points if you signed up for the offer.

As for "timeshare runs," sorry, you're only eligible for points every 12 months. The Grand Vacations Club website (hgvc.com) has more details on current offers.

CozumelJen, all of the other Florida properties (other than Orlando and Miami South Beach) are old timeshare resorts that sold out a long time ago. It was a chain that Hilton took over the management for. So there are NO timeshare tours to take there. The only locations currently selling weeks are Orlando, South Beach, Las Vegas, Honolulu and perhaps Breckenridge (which was taken over from bankrupt Sunterra)..

And, unless they contact you directly and make the 20-30,000 point offer, or you sign up from an ad in your Hilton Hotel room in that same city, you would not get such an offer for taking the tour..All the Hilton properties in Vegas try to snag couples to go on the tour; they typically offer a free dinner or maybe $40 in casino chips for taking the tour..

I believe it was only 15,000 points back in 1996. We went for a cheap weekend in Las Vegas for taking the tour (along with the 15,000 points) and wound up buying. We received a 280,000 HHonors point bonus for purchasing.

I can refer people to take the tour (they typically get a highly discounted 2-night stay at one of the timeshare resorts or Hilton Hotels in Vegas, no points). Any of my referrals that buys nets me 75,000 HHonors points or $350 toward my yearly maintenance fee (only the first sale per year can opt for the $350). In the past 2 years, 3 referrals have purchased, but 2 of those ended up cancelling..
