Get your free Upgrade

I know the following has to be wrong, but it is so ludicrous I just had to post it here.

Called HHonors asking if there were any room upgrade awards (using points). She proceeds to tell me the following:

"Oh, you don't need any points. Just book your room and ask for an upgraded room when you check in. If it's available, it's yours."

Me:

"You don't understand.. I'm not asking about an award stay or anything. Say I bought a $199 value rate at the Waldorf, and wanted to upgrade to a suite. How many points would it cost?"

Her:

"If it's available, you will receive a suite, and it won't cost you any points".

Me:

"No money, either?"

Her:

"No."

I re-argued this with her another two times, so apparently this is what she thinks is policy. I would LOVE to get this in writing.

Seriously though, is Hilton employing insane people now?

(Just to clarify, I am Hilton Blue, and she knew this)

Sometimes they are in never never land. Even as a gold or diamond the upgrades get you the best available room, not suites. Well at least not the penthouse type of suites, I've gotten the junior exec suites which is just a bigger room. And no you can't purchase upgrades with points but dollars are gratefully accepted.

Cheers Scott

While they are only required to upgrade you to the best available room, many properties will upgrade you to a suite anyway. I'm Diamond and never ask for a suite, but receive one on about 1 of 4 stays. Again, this is very dependent on the property. I have also received upgrades on a few occasions to the Presidential Suite. That is a real treat!

what baffles me is the endless upgrade coupons they print with my monthly hilton hhonors statements. I'm diamond!!! why do I need these certificates?? (besides to give away to friends or coworkers)

As GOLD and DIAMOND, you are "Supposed" to get upgraded at checkin to best available for free. Of course it's up to the individual hotel even though it is published offically in the HHonours book.

One property I would NEVER NEVER return to is the new Vancouver Metrotown Hilton. I had to call the customer service agent and started a verbal fight with the front desk guy throwing rules back and forth at each other. They just refused to upgrade me to Exec. Floor even though it was almost empty. Eventually, the customer service agent apologize to me and inform the guy to upgrade me. It was just a foul experience.. I almost told the guy that I am going to check out right at that moment since I arrived before the cancel deadline.

On the other hand, the people at the Hilton Vancouver Airport is very nice. I have become almost a weekly guest at that hotel. Even though it is a all suite hotel, I always get the high floor corner room which is a bit bigger than all the others and most importantly respect from them!

This just proves how good customer service will keep our business.

Regards,
Empress

This seems real to me as I am Platinum with Starwood and I get a suite every time I stay. Did you get your upgeade? At Starwood if I want to buy an upgrade I am told to ask at the front desk and I can buy them, but as Platinum I get them free, so why bother. I also get guaranteed space outside 72 hours prior to arrival, they will walk someone for me if they are sold out. This I like.
