I have averaged 100 plus nights@ Hilton properties over the past 7 years.
3 yrs ago My girlfriend and I went to europe ( 1 week in frankfurt including air fare from Green Bay, Wi. USA and 1 week at the Hilton in Athens) all on 500,000 hhonors points .
I liked the hilton honors progrem more before the points/airfare was shut down. But the points are free so as a corporate traveller who am I to complain.

Points redeemed:
500000 european vacation
60000 bangkok milenium hilton
70000 bangkok conrad
18000 st louis hilton
110000 las vegas points/chips +$400.00
35000 Bangkok conrad
40000 Hanoi Hilton

833,000 total used points over the last 7 years

430000 Points I have right now
1,263,000 all totaled -->used and unused points


Right now I am in a Hampton in St Louis Mo. I was looking at stuff on ebay and saw people selling honors points on e bay. One seller was finishing off a auction on 50,000 points and w/2hrs to go the bid was @ $355.00
I thought that selling honors points was against the policy that Hilton has governing point use?

Heres the quandry- if someone offered me $355.00 per 50000 points for all the points that I have/had accumulated it would have been hard to say no to $8967.30
On the other hand, I could have bought a used saturn with that kind of money!.... would I trade the trips I have taken and the cruise we are going on as soon as I get up to 550000 for a sweet used car? (saturn)

I'm pretty sure, as well, that it is illegal to sell or barter HH points. I'd also not pay 0.007 for them. Mine are free too, and I wouldn't trade what I've done with them.

Hhonors used to offer a casino chip reward back when Park Place was part of Hilton and they owned Las Vegas Hilton.

So back then you could legally cash in HHonors points for chips at the LV Hilton casino and then cash those in for cash. I believe it was 100,000 HHonors points equalled $400 in chips? Not the best value, but it was a way to convert them into cash.

I believe I moved 50,000 airline miles over to HHonors (converted into 100,000 HHonors points) and then used 200,000 HHonors points for two certificates worth a total of $800 cash.

Definitely against the rules, but people do it. If you want to sell points, you better sell all of yours because if/when HH finds out about it, you are going to lose the rest of them. Same thing happens with airline points too. People "auction" off a postage stamp with a "free" airline ticket to get around the rules. Most airline miles are worth more than HH miles though, so $0.007/point for HH sounds pretty good. Better to save for your vacation!

Owie69 is correct. There used to be PAGES of Southwest Rapid Reward Airline tickets on sale via ebay for a very long time until just a few years ago. My guess is that somebody complained and "they" had to do something about it. I have heard, although not confirmed, that many of the folks selling their SWA airlines were either suspended from ebay and/or lost their ticket.

Here is the thing....for both rewards (points/award tickets), you are allowed to GIVE your reward away. I have actually had someone "gift" me a GLONP. Did I compensate them in any way? I certainly could have. Putting these types of offers on ebay is just asking for trouble though.

Although when I check ebay from time to time, I still see a few SWA tickets and they are ALWAYS in our local newspaper and ALWAYS available on craigslist. So I guess it depends how loudly and to whom someone complains the loudest before any action is taken. I don't understand why anyone would care...the points/awards are already earned and who cares if someone pays someone for it...no skin off the suppliers back and no money is lost that hasn't already been paid/earned.

Airlines and hotel chains have active fraud departments - they cruise eBay, they (ahem!) probably cruise FlyerTalk, they intercept folks who are about to use their il-gotten awards and confiscate them, shut down accounts, etc. It may be attractive to sell / buy, but they often have ways of tracing these transactions. Frankly, I am not inclined and would not risk it.

They do seem to have some tolerance for some inifrequent small-time exchanges - say you gift your friend a UA trip and in return you are gifted a GLONP or whatever - since they allow awards to friends, family, etc. with few restrictions other than they are not supposed to be sold or bartered.

"10. The sale or barter of any HHonors points, Certificates, Rewards Confirmations or other HHonors benefits other than by Hilton HHonors Worldwide, LLC, is prohibited. Any points, Certificates or benefits which Hilton deems to have been transferred, sold or assigned in violation of Program Terms and Conditions may be confiscated or canceled."

has anyone actually had their accounts closed because of selling their points on ebay? or do they get a "warning" the first time so they don't do it again?

Not really sure if they do or not, but I can tell you that I won't ever know first hand because I am not about to sell any points or awards! They are much to valuable for meeeeee!

The company that will have to provide free services/products probably care because the person selling is probably selling because they are not going to use the points/miles thus their willingness to sell. On the flip side, the person buying the points/miles finds them valuable and will most likely use them.

Bottom line, I believe the likelihood of the points/miles being redeemed goes up b/c of the sales transaction where otherwise perhaps the likelihood of them expiring/not being redeemed is higher with the person selling them.

Personally speaking, I'd rather give my award away as opposed to letting it expire. So again, just my opinion, no skin of their nose as the reward has already been earned once already. They are not going to make any more money off of it whether it is used, sold, expired, traded, etc. Granted, if it expires, then they have really won, but I would say that most folks would give the awards away than watch them expire.

Could just be me....at least that is what I would do.

Southwest tickets used to be bartered all the time when they issued the paper tickets. There was a place in Dallas that, at one point, was paying 330 cash per ticket. At the same time there were a number of deals going on that made it possible to generate a ticket every other round trip. That was very compelling. At one point I had accumulated over 30 tickets worth of points, So of course I sold them, it was almost 9K in cash. Amazing thing of it, I went to this address that I had plugged into neverlost, and was buzzed into this non-descript office that had nothing but cheap overstock leftover office furniture in it, I told the girl who was sitting behind the desk that I had these tickets to sell, and she checked each one. She then reached into this drawer and started counting $100 bills out. I couldn't believe it.

Now would I sell my HHonors points? I dunno, $335 per 50K? that's pretty reasonable, seems overpriced though.

Description
Up for auction are 50,000 points that are good at Hampton Inn, Hampton Inn & Suites, Hilton, Doubletree, Embassy Suites, and the rest of the hotels in the picture logo. This auction is ideal for a 2 night stay at a category 3 hotel (which is 25,000 points per night.) If you want to stay at a different category hotel, you can choose the first option of receiving points to your account to combine them with points you already have (charges apply for the transfer as per Hilton policy). I am a diamond member at Hilton and I can get some hotels that are not available online, so e-mail me if the hotel you want doesn't have rooms open on your dates. The 2 options for using the points are:

1. You can have these points transfered to your Hilton Honors account. There is a $25.00 fee by Hilton Honors for every 10,000 points that you will be responsible for. Thus, for 50,000 points it would be an extra $125.

or

2. The best and cheaper way is for me to book your stay for you. It can be 2 nights at a category 3 hotel. I can book it and Hilton can either send you the 2 night certificate in your name through the mail or I can have them email it to you and you can print it out on your printer, which ever you would prefer. Upon check-in at the hotel, you may need a credit card for incidentals only...room service, mini bar purchases, or anything extra you buy while visiting the hotel. If you don't buy anything extra, you will not be charged for anything.



To look up a category 3 hotel in the city you want to visit, go to www.hilton.com. Type in your city, state, dates. It will pull up several hotels, click on the hotel's name. Under the "Our Hotel" off to the side it will tell you what category the hotel is. If you can't figure out what category your's is, let me know and I will look it up for you.

If your hotel is a category 4 or 5, I have extra points available that you can purchase in addition to these and we can work out a price for them, just let me know.

Choose your hotel and in the “Our Hotel” section near the top of the page, you will find the AAA Diamond rating, Hilton HHonors Reward Category and also under that, a listing showing how many points are required for a free night. 50,000 points will yield you at least one night at 99% of the Hilton family hotels in the world. It is a great bargain for some of the more expensive hotels.

eBay previously caught someone trying to sell Delta miles and unilaterally removed it from their website. I'm surprised they haven't caught the alleged Diamond HH seller and removed it as well

Man, I've sold a SWRR here or there myself, but $9k. You rock! That is pretty amazing. I hope you did something really special with that.

I just checked ebay yesterday and there were about 5 SWRR for sale. So you still see them there, but not pages and pages like there used to be.

And the "paperless" SWRR are just as easy to "give" as the old ones. You make the initial reservation and you don't have to have anything further to do with it. They can change the dates/times again and again w/out penalty, just not the name. The name can be changed, YOU just have to be involved in the transaction again.
