New Guarantee/Hold Option for Reservation?

New Guarantee/Hold Option for Reservation?
I just booked a room at the new Doubletree, Bethesda, MD (which, as an aside, I don't think there's been any reviews of yet). On the reservations page, I had the following two options:
1) Please hold my room until 6PM on the check in day. With this option your room will not be guaranteed for late check in -- if you do not check in by 6PM your reservation will be automatically cancelled.
or
2) Please guarantee my room for late arrival with my credit card. If you wish to cancel, please do so 24 hours before arrival to avoid cancellation penalties.
I must admit, I've never seen this before. Is this new?

It depends on the hotel policy. Some hotels require Credit Card to hold, others give you the option you noticed.
