I created a user name and a password.
But, the system will not let me sign in using the user name. I must use my HHonors number and my new password.
Of course, every trial and error attempt to figure this out required passing the Gotcha! test too.

I was one of the early adopters on the first round, Feb 19. I have updated my password again - thanks to Erin for her patience with the rabble-rousers here on FT.
I did get confirmation that the password had changed (a green box displays above the password change section saying the change was successful), and I tested the new password and it works without issue.
As noted by Erin, the PIN will continue working until the end of March, but then will disappear.

maybe you made the same mistake that I did...
When you create the password, it is more obvious how you get it to take whereas adding a User Name requires that you click on Save Changes well down the page. I didn't and found the same behavior you noted until I went back and found my newly selected User Name wasn't shown on the preferences page. Once changed (again) and Saved (for the first time), it worked as advertised.

Well I'm now more confused than ever.
I changed my password yesterday. Everything seemed fine. I can and have used the new one and/or the old PIN to sign in.
Today there is a yellow banner at the top of my account page telling me to change my password.
And to make it even more confusing, I just got an e-mail from Hilton saying that, based on my request to change my password, here is my opportunity to do so - with a "one time" (their words) link to change it!

This is a big security concern. If someone manages to get in to your account, the first thing they might do is change the password. With no email confirmation being sent, you wouldn't realize that there was a problem until you attempted to log in. I also wonder if there is a confirmation sent to the current email if that email is changed as well. Most sites worth their salt send emails if there are any substantive changes like these.
