Postings of speedtest.net / Ookla results at Hilton Properties

Minimum specifications of 'Stay Connected' (the Hilton Worldwide Guest Internet program) as of 2017:
  • Complimentary access to the hotel’s standard internet connection offering must be provided to all Hilton Honors members with Blue, Silver or Gold level status who have booked through an approved channel. At a minimum, the member must be able to maintain simultaneous active connections on three devices.
  • Premium Internet access should be made available to guests at prices that are competitive with prevailing charges in the local market. The recommended maximum daily charge for Premium Internet access (wireless) is US$6.95. Diamond Hilton Honors members who have booked through an approved channel enjoy complimentary access to the hotel’s highest speed (Premium) internet connection offering. At a minimum, the member must be able to maintain simultaneous active connections on three devices.
  • Minimum 6 Mbps download/upload (with Premium access) and 2Mbps download/upload (with Standard access).
  • Complimentary and Premium wireless Internet access must be available throughout the hotel.
  • Wireless Internet access must be installed in all guest accessible interior areas of the hotel to meet a minimum signal strength of -65 dBm (RSSI) on both the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands with a signal to noise ratio (SNR) of at least 30 dB.
  • The hotel is not permitted to apply total data consumption caps on a per user or device basis, throttle speeds by application type, or block/limit access to application types that lead to high bandwidth consumption rates.
  • All hotels must set individual bandwidth user caps which enable a minimum of 2 Mbps download/upload or higher for Complimentary Internet access and a minimum of 6 Mbps download/upload or higher for Premium Internet access and have sufficient bandwidth to deliver to that standard. The bandwidth user caps for the Premium offering must always be at least three times higher than the Complimentary offering (example: a 9Mbps download/upload Premium cap setting would be paired with a 3 Mbps download/upload or less Complimentary cap setting).
  • Hotels may offer wired access in addition to wireless.

Desk clerk had a) no idea that Diamonds now are supposed to get Premium Access for free, b) no idea that there were in fact two different tiers.

Sigh.

Hilton Tapatio Cliffs - Phoenix

Free

No faster option, which surprised me a bit.

Still, I think this is the fastest I have gotten from any Hilton family property since I started checking. Marriott, on the other hand...much more common to get this or higher.

Still at Pointe Hilton Tapatio Cliffs in Phoenix.

I checked the speed again on free wifi and got this.

Then a few minutes later it was time to log in again. This time it gave me the option for Premium Wifi (I didn't recall seeing it last night, but perhaps I just hit free out of habit?). I called down the the front desk and was told I can do Premium Wifi for free, they will remove from bill. The cost? $19.95!

So, I sign on for my free Premium Wifi, excited as free wifi was faster than most places I have been. Here are my results.

Ummm... glad I didn't spring for the $19.95!!

drumroll.........

I may have a new goto spot.

I actually changed my stay this week from the Hilton Tampa Downtown to the Embassy Suites Westshore based on that wifi result from a couple of weeks ago. Evidently, since I've been away, they "upgraded" their wifi and the new results are below:

Since there's no promotion starting next week, and Erin's announcement about free wifi for diamonds back on 3.2.15 doesn't seem to be happening anytime soon, I believe it's time to go for Hyatt status.

Hmm.. that's strange you'd get such a different result. I wonder if that person used the business center instead??

This is with the "purchase premium" option, front desk didn't know about free for Diamond but said they would take it off my bill.

Given how badly it connects, I think they mean Kb/s rather than Mb/s. It took 3 tries just to reach speedtest.net.

For others that don't want to click through the link:

12ms/2.07/1.96

btw - that's actually pretty good for Hilton's standards!
