I have done approximately 30 stays as Gold HH so far this year, mostly in the UK.
I tend to book the cheapest room available and use the UK public sector discount code when possible. My upgrade rate is 100%. Usually the upgrade shows automatically in my HH account shortly beforehand. I haven't ever asked at check-in.

A few recent stays:

Leeds DoubleTree
Booked: QUEEN GUESTROOM
Received: KING DELUXE ROOM (Black Sheep Ale & Parkin or Toffee in room)
Paid

Hilton Manchester Airport
Booked: QUEEN HILTON GUESTROOM
Received: QUEEN HILTON GUESTROOM PLUS
Paid

Hilton Manchester Deansgate
Booked: QUEEN HILTON GUESTROOM
Received: KING HILTON EXECUTIVE
Paid

Hilton Bradford
Booked: KING HILTON GUESTROOM
Received: DOUBLE HILTON DELUXE (wine & mini-cakes)
Paid

Conrad Macao
Booked: 2 King Deluxe rooms
Received: 1 King Deluxe room and 1 King Deluxe suite
Paid
Received upgrade at check in

Additional Info: Internet was complimentary for the suite, but I had to pay for internet in the regular room. Essentially, Gold benefits applied to one room only (which is fair).

I have been a gold member for over 5 years, and receive an upgrade at full service properties over 90% of the times without asking. I usually book the least expensive room, and receive an upgrade to the executive floor. Sometimes on vacation, or in a hotel with no executive lounge, I receive a suite or Jr. suite.

At the lower end properties, I have only received an upgrade once without asking, and that was at a HGI in Florida--Panama City, I think it was (it was many years ago). At Hampton or HS, I occasionally receive one when I ask, although not very often.

Hilton Dresden

Paid
Upgraded to a 2-level Master Suite

Too bad that it was for one night and we arrived late (11PM). Anyway, my wife and son were really happy with the upgrade.

How are your golds getting email address for the managers at the properties you are staying? I'm Gold and have a week stay at the Hilton Waikiki in June....upgrade would be huge with a 2 year old!

April 2013

Hilton FCO
Award stay
Standard Room
Upgraded to Exec Floor at check in. Just being told so. No request made.
Full lounger access. However it is one of the worst lounges in any chain we have seen in terms of food/drink offerings.
Brekkie at restaurant as lounge closed on Monday morning - a lucky thing because based on previous evening's experience, the foods at lounge would not be any good. Very spacious restaurant. Good but not excellent, breakfast items.

Hilton Lyon
Award stay
Premium Room (on sale and less point cost than Standard Room)
Were told that Upgrade room at Exec floor was not ready at check in. No request made.
We took the non-upgrade room (low floor) but gained lounge access.
Brekkie can be at lounge or restaurant which is wonderful, though the space is somewhat tight.

Hilton CDG
Award stay
Hotel email reminder offered e-upgrade options. Executive room no cost.
Upgrade to runway view at check in. No request made.
Brekkie can be at lounge or restaurant which is very good.

Hilton CDG just moved its lounge from 8th floor to the ground floor. It still has the "newness" smell. They were still putting the final touch on the paint job at the front of the lounge when we were there on 4/17. Lounge is of good size but no window.

Upcoming stay

Conrad Hong Kong
AXON award
Hotel email offered e-upgrade to mountain view room at no cost.

Do these upgrades only work when bookings are made via hhonors website or can it be via Expedia/Booking.com etc?

Hilton Orlando Lake Buena Vista received access to the business floor they called it which allowed us access to the breakfast lounge and free Internet (which I know we get anyway).

Asked about room upgrade and they said there were none but the rooms on our floor are a little bigger. Hotel didn't look very busy so I doubt there weren't upgrades open but didn't push the topic (hate asking, rather have them just tell me "we couldn't upgrade you but we value you as a gold" or something like that).

Louge only has breakfast and one of the worst free breakfasts I've ever had.

When you book via a 3rd party, your Hhonors number isn't part of your folio. All the information (other than your name) is from the booking engine (lists the address/phone for them.). What you have to do is to call the hotel as far in advance as possible and have them add your Hhonors number and your information to the folio. Otherwise, they will have NO clue as to your Hhonors status.
