account deactivated

I have/had a HH account simply for some 3rd party pointtransfers.
Mostly from e-rewards. I transfered 4 times ( 2 in 2009 and 2 in 2010 ) and the account had aprox 14xxx points. yesterday I tryed to sighn into my account, but was not able to do. I called customer service and was told, the account was deactivated end of last year, she also confirmed the 14+k pointbalance, but said due to I not stayed in 2009 and 2010 them deactivated my account. I pointed out the T&C also say a pointtransfer from a 3rd. party should keep the account alive. She said no, only stay or buy points from HH count !
Already mailed to them, any infos/sugestions how to handle this ?

Get a customer service manager on the phone and go over the T&C
with them

She was wrong. Here is the exact wording from the T&C (I put the relevant part into bold face):

Quote:
Members who do not have eligible activity as defined in a. - d. below in any 12 consecutive month period may be removed from the Program and are subject to forfeiture of all accumulated points. At the discretion of Hilton HHonors Worldwide, such Members may be permitted to remain in the Program and removed after five years of inactivity.. To keep accumulated HHonors points, the Member must take one of the following actions within a 12 consecutive month period:

a. stay at a hotel within the Hilton Worldwide portfolio pursuant to the terms herein;

b. earn HHonors points through any third party source of HHonors point accumulation, including a Hilton co-branded credit card, pursuant to its terms;

c. purchase HHonors points; or,

d. donate points through The Hilton HHonors Giving Back Program.
The above can be found at http://hhonors1.hilton.com/en_US/hh/terms.do

Actually it says earn through a third party, not transfer from a third party. That could be part of the problem.

When were your transfers in 2010? If they were before July, it doesn't matter as it would have expired anyways.

I think the sticking point is how they are defining earn and transfer, unlike the airlines where any activity counts, some of the hotel programs, like Hilton, say you have to earn Hilton points, not just have activity like a transfer in from another program.

"ANY" and "EARN" are the key words. Your account should not be closed.

I share your interpretation. Transferred isn't earned.

The remaining question is "when" in 2010 were the transfers made.

in the Hilton HHonors website, e-rewards is not in the "Earn Points and Miles" nor "Transfer Points" section.. they are in "Exchange Points or Miles". The official T&C statement "earn HHonors points through any third party source of HHonors point accumulation" is the way I would bold it. E-rewards is a 3rd party source for HH points. And if you ask me, taking all those surveys is most definitely "earning" the points.

OP: you mention point balance 14"xxx" ... you had change? Where else did you get points? All the partners (car rental, shopping/dining, etc) are in the "Earn Points" section.

Hilton is pretty clear in the description of their different programs where you are actually earning points. On the OneSIM description for example:

HHonors members enjoy two ways to earn HHonors bonus points while using their mobile phones abroad.

Clearly saying you earn HHonors points

But for e-rewards (and e-miless) they are pretty clear that you are earning some other point system which can be transferred to HHonors Points.

As a member of e-Rewards, you'll accrue e-Rewards earnings, which can be redeemed for HHonors points

and for e-miles

Join millions of other frequent travelers who are earning e-Miles® miles by spending a few minutes each week reading and responding to marketing messages that are relevant to you. Exchange your e-Miles miles for Hilton HHonors™ bonus points

In neither of those are they saying you are earning HHonors points as they do in I believe the description of every other program. It's a small distinction that some people may not agree with, but my theory is unless they state you are earning HHonors points, it won't count as earning points. Transferring in points from another program, to me and apparently in this case Hilton, does not count as activity.

Only had 1 stay with them in 2008, in 2009 2 transfers from e-rewards, and 2010 2 transfers from e-rewards. The last was aprox october 2010. But if them not accept the points transfers from e-rewards as an valid activity , them should tell this people in advance, them actually get $$ from e-rewards for these points.
Also an email them claimed to have sent , I never received ! I have an aol email and can show whole history from received emails ! Also not in spam folder.

Welcome to HHonors customer loyalty where infrequent guests regularly learn that hotel points are not yours, but theirs.

I accumulated over 2 million points in my account and spent years as HHonors Diamond, but that didn't stop HHonors from closing my account and wiping out my 20,000+ points balance when I stayed away too long.

HHonors is the most aggresive hotel loyalty program for wiping out accounts.

In contrast, I went about six years without a Marriott stay and then redeemed 20,000 points when I needed a hotel stay.

The points are valid activity, but unlike the airlines, it's not activity that extends the status of Hilton points, it's earning points.

As I've quoted a few times in this thread, to me at least they are very clear as to the difference between just activity and earning points.

I think HH is pretty insistent about keeping HHonors a loyalty reward program; if I were the OP I would 1) call again, and if not satisfied, 2) use a printed letter appealing and stating the apparent lack of clarity in the terms and conditions.

Chris Elliott has some contact points here.
