I have only been a HHonors member for the past couple of quarters. Do their quarterly promotions normally not count reward stays? I know that Q4 25,000 promotion did count reward stays. Disappointed to see this one will not count reward stays.

But if my memory holds me I warned fellow members several times to use "January Sale Rate" if they like to be save to combine this stay to an all in all very rich promotion.
Sadly most of the time poor communication correspond with easy to avoid frustration.

However, I made a printout of the excluded rates and I will certainly argue that the January Sales Rate is not on that list but only an obscure Advanced Purchase 2 for 1.
As said earlier: To my belief the January Sales Rate is (even not considering the breakfast) in most cases by far richer than the free nights (there are not too many cheap and acceptable Hilton places in Europe). If I safe a 50 GBP plus tax per night, this is a saving of about 170 GBP in three nights and I fancy this more than a free night.

An emphatic warning for anyone considering doing a mattress run to qualify for this promo and who may be tempted to book the Advanced Purchase Rate:
IT DOESN'T QUALIFY!!
I think it's horrible they pulled that trick without giving some kind of warning in the 'large Print''.
I made that mistake today but called the Advanced Rate Service 800 # and explained the situation. The CSR was nice enough to cancel the reservation and reverse the charge. Whew!!!

Very interesting discussion here.
So I have been investigating this issue of the Winter sale rates. Guess what?
Hilton Reservations told me their system is down and call back in 30 minutes.
Looking at the international January Sale rate I see the link shows the rate code as PRO9SW which is the 2 for 1 advance purchase excluded in the free night promotion terms.
The USA January Sale link I checked for Hilton San Francisco shows the rate code as PGJS01 which is not on the rate exclusion list.
Looks like Hilton may be shafting the international folks who got a 50% discount on rates, but letting US/Canada stays with just a 33% discount apply towards the free night promotion.

Advance Payment Rate is PR09AP internationally or Q0 in the US and both are not on the list. Even the US January Sale PGJS01 is not on the list.
The most embarrassing for European members is that obviously several of these cheap US hotels are qualifying whereas even 500 Euro rates under PR09SW or PR13CB internationally will not qualify.

Not necessary, IIRC, the Q4 promo also had language excluding advance rate, however, HHR later on clarified that normal advance rates indeed qualify for that promo, so we just need to wait for HHR's answer on this.

It is even worse: Four stays in some 80 Dollars Hampton qualify for 300 Euro free night in a top Hilton in Europe whereas my 400 Euro stays in such top Hilton in Europe under the January Sales Rate do not qualify . I miss the old days when "our" Hilton was still a UK brand.

Indeed, FlyingLawyer, this is embarassing but the usual US trash that we get from Hilton. Sad situation but the reality

Well these rates are on the "Don't Qualify" list:
A01 A0 ARES ADV PURCHASE
A41 A4 ARES ADV PURCHASE
And the Supervisor at the DD who talked to me said the Advanced Purchase Rates didn't qualify. Maybe you're right, it might be too early to know for sure. A clarification from Andrea would be very welcome!!!
