I wonder if that is why - I know I've seen the Legacy sedan listed as a small SUV b/c it had AWD.

A few of my recent rentals:

Car Description: SIRLACROSSE3.6S N445506
Veh. No.: 5311808
CAR CLASS Rented: G
This is DEFINITELY NOT "H" or "YH"
"G" Lacrosses include (working) factory nav, rearview camera, power sunshades, heated steering wheel, heated/cooled leather seats, proximity key (with remote & push-button start), heads up display, Harman Kardon 11 speaker stereo... I can't imagine there are any other options! I've received 3 identical rentals, all from different locations (and all 3 labled "YH" on the key), and the reciepts confirm that they are actually classified as "G" in the system.
Car Description: N/L COMPASS 4WS BDD5302
Veh. No.: 1868934
CAR CLASS Rented: Q4
Not in List

Car Description: N/LTRAV AWD 7PS BWT1224
Veh. No.: 1006964
CAR CLASS Rented: L4 (7 pass std SUV?)
Don't see "L4" listed above

Car Description: SIREQUINOXAWD2S C7134X
Veh. No.: 1036904
CAR CLASS Rented: L (std SUV?)
Don't see "L" listed above

Car Description: SIR AVENGER 2.S 652ZSW
Veh. No.: 2354264
CAR CLASS Rented: F
Listed as "D" above, now classified as "F"
Stupid class creep.

Car Description: SONATA 4CYL G748358
Veh. No.: 5416730
CAR CLASS Rented: YF
Base Sonata, high mileage, no upgrades is "YF" (not "F" as listed above)
So sad, but apparently true.

Car Description: SIRGRCHER4W3.6S A617795
Veh. No.: 1674993
CAR CLASS Rented: L (Std SUV?)
Again, don't see "L" listed above

Car Description: ALTIMA FCL3062
Veh. No.: 1134444
CAR CLASS Rented: YF
Altima w/ no options (and 40k miles) is confirmed to be "YF", not "F"
I cannot begin to tell you how disheartening this is to me.

Car Description: SIR IMPALA 3.5S 567YEQ
Veh. No.: 8685620
CAR CLASS Rented: F
As of 11/7/2011 a fully loaded Impala w/ sirius is "F" not "YF"
Hope this doesn't change now that "F" is "Chevrolet Malibu or similar"!

Hmmm, I booked a Premium recently, and they tried to give me an Impala with NL.

Is it possible that Impala + NL = Premium or were they trying to pull a fast one on me?

At best I would think it could be a "YF" but even that seems like a stretch to me... I am somewhat disappointed when I get a Maxima as a premium rental after experiencing the Lacrosse, which is superior in every way. Impala is between a basic and midrange full size car depending on trim level, but certainly only the LTZ or SS trim could even begin to pass for an entry-level premium sedan.

Personally I wouldn't ever accept an Impala for a premium rental unless the only alternative was a grand marquis!

The worst one on that list to me is Avenger as F. Seriously? Wow. This would be a huge new level of class creep that should put Corollas up to D sometime soon if that's really what they're doing....

Avenger as F? That's insane, not even Enterprise is that ludicrous.

Picked up a Dodge Durango from SFO on Tuesday. Keychain says L4. Not sure if this is an upgrade on the Traverse originally booked

Just saw that the LaCrosse is no longer the premium or a like model. It is now the Nissan Maxima. I'll be going to Detroit and hope they don't dare to give me a Japanese car in Motor City.

Wow. They must have just changed this.

I have had plenty of Maximas and I have yet to see a single one with any upgrades over the base model. They do not have leather, satellite, or any of the myriad of options that the LaCrosse has. It is a decidedly entry level full-size car with a slushy CVT transmission and horrible fuel economy. Not very different from the old Impalas, and definitely NOT a "premium" car.

So in summary, now the (stated) sedan options are:
Note the quotes around the deceptive car classes!
  • "Intermediate" - Corolla (compact)
  • "Standard" - 2 door Altima (midsize coupe)
  • "Full Size" - Malibu (midsize)
  • "Premium" - Maxima (entry full-size)
  • "Luxury" - Towncar (boat with wheels)
Hertz has now succeeded in making sure that all of their offerings, regardless of price, are equally unappealing to me!

There's a decent chance it won't be in general, although I can't tell you any specifics about DTW's fleet. I felt pretty funny about 5 years ago or whenever that was when I drove a rental Hyundai up to Detroit, but it didn't get broken into or anything.

A couple more...

High mileage 4-cyl Accord with no options (not even sat) is classified as "YF" (received as a 5* for "F" rental w/ paid sat)

Buick Regal 4-cyl was classified as a "YF" on the key tag and contract, but showed as "G" on the final receipt. (this one was a 5* "G" rental, also w/ paid sat)

Wish we could sort out this Regal thing once and for all. What's weird is I looked my contract at the time up and down several times and couldn't find any notation at all except for that I reserved and paid for D. (I just found it again the other day, added to shred pile, but maybe I'll look one more time. ) The key tag said YF, of course. Receipt at end said G, although it was the receipt printed from online because I dropped it just after they closed (wasn't due back until the following day). While I think it wouldn't be surprising for some key tags to lag changes in classes, I would expect it more on older cars. The Regal I had was nicely appointed with leather, moonroof, heated seats, etc. As an upgrade from D, I was certainly happy with it. Still, I think it's smaller than most people used to expect for G, especially after years of hulking Grand Marqs.

When the G description said LaCrosse or similar, which is the next size up Buick, having the Regal also be G seemed very odd. Now with G apparently switched to Nissan Maxima or similar, maybe it's not so odd anymore and instead just regular class creep....

If a Hertz location doesn't have any cars available in the class you reserved, do they have the ability to manually override a car's class so that the reciept says you drove the class you reserved? I feel like the reciept often shows a car normally classifed as "YF" as a "G" when I reserve a premium, and I have seen the same with intermediate cars when I reserve an "F" (i.e. Avenger).

I have also seen identical cars called "G" at one location and "YH" at another (i.e. navi LaCrosse). I'm not sure if it's a corporate policy or shady dealings at specific locations, but I feel like the car classes are a moving target that is often inconsistent across corporate locations. This seems especially true at airports, while HLEs IME are much more honest about what they do and don't have available.
