I just added a new section entitled "(3) Tips for those departing out of HNL where HNL is the point of departure." If you have any suggestions or additions to this topic, please feel free to pass them along.
I've never done a same-day inter-island connection, so I'd appreciate some help.
We're landing in HNL on UA at 12:46PM. Could we make a 2PM Aloha flight? I'm not sure if we're checking a bag or not - we may do all carry on. But if we do, UA at LAX can check it all the way through on Aloha as long as I have my ticket number, etc, correct?
Now the bigger question. For our return, we're departing HNL for ORD at 5:15PM. We're coming from LIH, this time on Hawaiian. I'm assuming a 3:46pm arrival time to HNL - 90 minutes prior to our UA flight's departure, is enough time. Is that correct? Since we're coming back on Hawaiian, can the HA agents in LIH check our bag all the way through for our UA flights to the mainland?
Connecting to a Mainland Flight from an Interisland Flight
There is a wealth of info for those connecting into Hawaii, but I could not find any information for those who will be flying into HNL via Aloha or Hawaiian Air, and then connecting to a mainland carrier, such as Continental, especially if the tickets are purchased separately (not on one itinerary). Can the luggage be checked to the final destination from the interisland carrier? It would be difficult to have to claim the bags at HNL, and then recheck them at HNL, as well as redoing the entire checkin process.
Hopfully, the process will be seamless, but it would be nice to know.

Aloha. You'll find this information above in Post #2 under the heading "Return Flight:".
To answer your question, yes the process is seamless, just repeat the process backwards. You will not have to reclaim bags in HNL, just have the luggage checked to your final destination.
For most of you this is a no brainer, but for those who don't know...
Just returned from a trip to HNL and Kona. We had booked an award ticket on AA to from AUS-DFW-HNL. We then booked Hawaiian Air from HNL to Kona. I had printed out the great tips from above about connecting to an interisland lfight, etc. and thought I had it all down...but I forgot about "illegal connections".
WE got to the ticket counter at AUS and asked the agent to check our bags thru to Kona (we had checked in on-line at home for all flights). The agent began to assist us and then uttered the dreaded words "Uh-o"....
Our HA flight was only 1 hour after landing in HNL. According to AA rules, HNL MUST have 75 minutes for connections to check bags all the way thru. The agent gave us some good tips about how we could maybe avoid schlepping across HNL airport, but we ended up delayed, missed the original connection, etc.
My point is this - if you are not on a code share flight and have booked interisland flights separately from what got you to HNL, make sure you know what the arriving airlines rules are for connections (how long they require to make it "legal") or no matter how much you plan, you will have to claim your baggage and go back thru security, etc.
A lesson well learned with 2 bags weihging 45 lbs!

Great advice. However, I've had friends who have interlined bags through less then 60 minutes flying in on AA and connecting out on HA.
Of course, the bags didn't make it, but they did get out on the next flight.
I tried to get the agent to do it anyway saying that I didn't care if the bags didn't make MY flight, but her response was "if your bags end up lost or don't make it with you, then AA will be responsible. My system tells me it's an illegal connection and if I force it, that means I'm accepting the responsibility for AA to get your bags to you at AA's cost and labor."
Since we were flying with HA from HNL to Kona (booked separately), she refused (politely) to put the problem on AA if one arose. So I guess maybe it's up to the agent and whether they want to catch the flack if there is any????

Actually, it seems as of recently that AA is beginning to enforce the minimum connection policy in HNL, meaning you need to have a x-min. connection in order for the bags to make it.
Anyone know what that minimum time is now so that I can update the FAQ?
We should make a competitive sport out of this. I came in around Gate 29 in the main terminal on Monday night, due in at 8:30 (HA 9) but got in a bit late (8:40) and then had to get off the plane (8:50), get over to claim B1 (far end of the interisland terminal) with my rollaboard in tow (9:00), pick up my checked bag once the carousel started (9:05 - it was the 10th piece off), then get over to the commuter terminal, check in at Go! (9:10), and go through security and across the tarmac to the waiting CRJ-200 (9:15) for departure (YV 1040) to Hilo (9:30).

What happens if your flight was the last flight of the day. I am trying to take a NWA flight into HNL that arrives at 6:13pm and take a HA flight at 8:00pm to KOA. However this is the last flight of the day. If my NWA flight is delayed, would I be required to purchase another ticket the next day?
