We took the shuttle a few weeks ago to the United gates, the very last ones, and it took no more than 15 minutes. One shuttle pulled out and another pulled up that we boarded. We were off in about 5 minutes and less than 10 to our last stop.
I'm sure walking would have been much, much longer.

From the Diamond Head Concourse where the UA gates are, most certainly. It's from one end of the airport terminal to the other. The CO gates are closer to the middle.
I find the walk quite pleasant even from the United gates but it is long, 15 to 20 minutes or so from there. 10 minutes from CO sounds about right. Great thing to do after sitting on a plane for 8 hours.
It's not clear from the comments about Island Air whether it's possible to connect from the Island Air gates to the main terminal airside, or whether it's necessary to reclear security. That may be helpful to know.
Any suggestions for how much time to allow for a connection FROM Island Air to a flight to the mainland?
How about going the other way? I've booked my whole family of 4 on 3 different airlines, but all for free on May 28. The first 2 will bring the bags and get in 2+hours early (AA and UA from ORD), but the last 2 will be coming first class on NW from MSP and getting in at 310. We are connecting to Island Air to Kappalua at 435. Will it be close - how long to connect in this direction? Would they hold the flight in case of delays since it is the last of the day to JHM?
I just looked and saw that they do now have web check in...would that make things a little easier, or not really with checking bags anyway?
Also, does UA or AA interline with them? When I called to check, the agents weren't sure at all...they were very confused about any island air, and one was confused about interlining...
How full are the HNL-JHM flights likely to be?
I'm not too concerned, but my family is - good news is we're all young and in shape...so we can hike it if needed!

There's not a lot of details, but according to this:
My daughter will be arriving 0130 at HNL and flying out 1130. I am not keen on sending her to the Shower Tree at that time of the night. I am wondering if there are any transit lounges or places at the airport where she can stay for a few hours--safely. Any thoughts much appreciated. She doesn't have status on any FF program.

Drawing a complete blank. Pre-911 there was the rent-a-wrecked room within HNL. Would have served you well. Other than the airline lounges, many of which you can access for an exhorbitant daily fee (and some or all of which close during middle of night hours at HNL), the only other choices I can think of are the dreadful airport hotels.
For that many hours, you can have your daughter take the shuttle or public bus into Waikiki. If she's interested in shopping she can get off at Ala Moana. If she is tired of walking around the mall, she can go to the Mariposa restaurant in Neiman Marcus, leisurely enjoy the view and the get a bite to eat.
If she wants to have some beach time, just have her hop off at any of the Waikiki hotels along Kalakaua Street. She can change in any of the public restrooms in the hotels as long as she acts like she belongs.
When it sun goes down, she can hang out in the lobby of any of the major hotels - Sheraton Moana Surfrider, Hyatt, Marriott, etc.. Then she can catch the shuttle/bus/taxi back to the airport when it is time.
If she wants to have a room to rest in, then you might try to get a priceline room in Waikiki for her.

Your plan sounds great and all, but the time in reference by the OP is 1:30am to 11:30am. I don't think the public buses, nor Ala Moana is alive and kicking around that time (well, maybe come daylight).
There is a United Red Carpet club, but it doesn't open until 5:15 am. I think the one-time passes are $50 (or maybe you can get one via coupon connection). Normally $50 is a waste of money for RCC, but in your case, might be cheaper and easier than a trip into town and hotel.

Uh, I may be mistaken (Slippahs will correct me if so) but I think HNL actually close down the terminal for a few hours in the wee hours.
The AKL, PPT, TPE & SYD flights all depart nominally 1AM. My understanding though was that they close the terminal and make a security sweep nominally from 3AM to 5AM.

If my understanding is correct, priceline.

Your understanding is correct. Guards will ask you to leave the terminal after hours. You do have the option of sleeping out near the curb... But, Priceline does sound to be the best choice.
Thanks everyone for the reply. I don't think curbside will be a good idea. I haven't done priceline but I thought that I could not do it since I am in Canada.
