The flight itself, of course, is only 20 minutes. But having been-there-done-that towing kids, you'll likely move more slowly than if it were just you I would suggest no less than 2 hours in HNL between flights.

How far apart are the terminals for the interisland to domestic (if there is such a deliniation).
As far apart as you can get (unless you count the commuter terminal). It's a brisk 15 minute walk for one person. But there is a WikiWiki Shuttle that is usually faster (but even when not is easier with such a large group, imo).

Will we have to claim bags, recheck? The flights (interisland and mainland) will be on different PNRs.
No. You just tell the agent in LIH that you want to "inter-line check" your bags. Since you don't have status on HA (I'm assuming) you will be charged an inter-island bag fee by HA unfortunately (1P status on UA doesn't count)
Do OLCI for your UA flight and show the agent your HNL-ORD boarding passes. They are very used to doing such inter-line baggage checks. Do check your bag tag just to be sure they got it right.

We haven't purchases the interisland flights yet, but will likely be Hawaiian Airlines.
I am a Premier Exec on United, if this helps with waitng for re-check, etc.
Unfortunately, no; it makes no difference.

Thanks for all the info - great stuff, and I totally missed the original thread, so I'll dig thru that now.
As for the inter-island fee, why would I have to pay that. I see that the bag fee's aren't starting until middle of september, so if I book before then, I should be fine, no?

True. I was assuming you'd be booking later. You'll obviously want to divvy the bags up between pax so that you don't get hit with the second-bag fee for any particular passenger if you can avoid it.

Fantastic info.. thank you very much! Not having to deal with bags in HNL will be stellar, and worth potentially paying a little more on the interisland tickets (to book now vs. in a month or so) may be worth it!!!

Btw, there are others who will tell you that 2 hours is more than you need at HNL. But given UA's penchant for changing flight times, it's the minimum I'd consider -- especially since I've seen UA2 HNL-ORD get changed to as early as 4:20pm.
I was wondering if the $10.00 fee will apply to people arriving at HNL from the mainland on a partner airline who will have their bags interlined directly from say Delta/NWA to their inter-island flight booked on Hawaiian Airlines?.

I think I read somewhere that there's no fee for that.
But say you're checking in at Hawaiian at LIH and interlining to the mainland on another carrier (say CO). Is Hawaiian going to collect CO's bag fee?

Well at least I will save a little money on that part of the trip, but They will nail me when I fly back to Honolulu and then Ill get it again when we fly back to the mainland 1 week latter, what a Racket.
I am flying from OGG to HNL to LAX. My interisland flight is not connected to my mainland flight(F on NWA). Me and the wife will be bringing 3 pieces of luggage.
1. How much time should I allow at HNL between flights?
2. Will I be charged a interline baggage charge?
3. If I am charged for interline baggage fee who much is the cost?

Enough Transit Time?
Question for you all: Is 75 min enough transit time at HNL from an incoming international flight to an Interisland flight on HA? My flight arrives at 18:15 and the next flight to KOA is at 19:30..cutting it tight?
As long as your flight arrives on time, you should not have an issue. When we fly into HNL on AA, we arrive at the Central Concourse. I believe that you will arrive at the EWA concourse (coming from Canada) which is closer to the Interisland terminal. Walking to the Interisland terminal takes no more than 15 minutes, inclusive of going through ag inspection.

Sounds good. What is the cut-off for check in bags, 30 min on Hawaiian Air?
Also, if i booked a later flight to KOA, would HA put us on standby for the earlier flight for free?
I do not know off hand what the cut off time for checking luggage with HA. Check with the HA website for that info, whether interisland, mainland USA or international.
I know you asked about getting to the interisland terminal and I said it was a 15 minute walk. Some might say the shuttle is quicker. I like the walk. Either way, are you considering grabbing your bags once arriving in HNL then rechecking with HA for your interisland flight? If so, two things. If you grab your bags you will need more than 15 minutes to get to the interisland terminal. Second, just have your airline check your bags thru to your final destination if they can.
As for booking a later flight and being placed on standby for earlier flight? Sure, they will do that but with that said I can't say whether you will make the flight or not. It will depend on how the economy is at that time. I have tried flying standby before and could not get on. Also, regarding your bags, if you get on the earlier flight you might end up going back to the airport to grab your bags. There is also a chance that your bags could make the earlier flight also. I have arrived at either KOA, LIH or OGG only to have my bags arrive ahead of me on an earlier flight.
Most of your hotels are 30 minutes to an hour from the above airports. In my opinion, why grab an earlier flight only having to wait at the airport for your bags to arrive or having to go back later that night ot the next morning.

Most airlines have an agreement with HA and they often will check your bags through even though you don't have a code share ticket.
For some reason, the word "standby" is a no-no at HA. If you say it, they will tell you that they don't let anyone do it. However, if you get the right gate agent and you bribe them with smiles and kind words, they might let you do it. You just can't use that word. Say something like, "I arrived early. Is there any possibilty that I could go on the early flight. Wow, those are great earrings." Seriously, that is my experience - more than once.
Check luggage all the way having separate tickets?
Hello, I am flying with United Airlines from Tokyo to Honolulu and then I would like to go to Hilo on the same day. I think United has a partnership with Hawaiian Airlines, so maybe if I buy the HNL-ITO ticket with Hawaiian, they could check in my luggage all the way from Tokyo to Hilo.
This way, I could make a longer stopover and visit Pearl Harbour without worrying about my luggage.
Does anyone have some experience with this? Probably not flying from Japan, but any hint is appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
