Let me add that this is true only if you've interlined your bags to the US Mainland if you're traveling on two separate tickets (e.g., OGG-HNL on HA and HNL-Mainland Destination on your choice of carrier). No one should expect that one's bags will be automatically interlined between HA and the second carrier under these circumstances when transiting in HNL. One should always ask the agent to "interline" the bags to the final destination and check the bag tags upon depositing one's bags in OGG or another inter-island departure city to ensure that the bag tags indeed read the final destination on them.
Yes, that is exactly my situation. I am on HA from OGG-HNL, then switching to DL back to the mainland. I was planning on asking them to interline my bags all the way through at the ticket counter at OGG. I will definitely make sure to look at the bag tag to make sure it shows the appropriate DL flight numbers/airports. Are the airlines usually willing to go through the process of interlining, or do they view it as a pain, therefore more likely to give me grief? Do I just need to supply them with my DL confirm # or do they need more info than that (like and e-ticket #)?

In order for an airline to "interline" a bag at a certain airport, there must be an interline agreement between those two carriers. Delta and Hawaiian have such an agreement and interline at HNL. It won't cause hassle, just show the HA agent at OGG the Delta confirmation e-mail/itin or boarding pass with the e-ticket number on it and ask them to "interline" your bags to your final destination. A confirmation number likely won't do you much good.
How to deal with missing the last connecting flight from HNL
This is hypothetical for the time being, but I need to know what to do if the worst happens.
Delta has changed our flight time LAX to HNL twice. We get in to HNL at 8:18 pm now. We have an inter-island Go! flight at 9:30 pm (last flight) to Lihue, Kauai. If our Delta flight is delayed getting into HNL and we miss our connection, will Delta put us up for the night in HNL? And get us back & forth to the airport?
If we need to stay overnight, which airport hotel is the lesser of two evils..Best Western or Ohana Airport Inn. I know both offer a free airport shuttle and I would not want to have to hassle with cabs or shuttles to Waikiki.
Where is the best place to try to sleep in the airport? I ask because we arrive Friday of Labor Day weekend. Just finding an available room might be difficult.
If the flights are on separate tickets I think you are SOL in getting DL to give you a free room in HNL. You usually can book another DL flight for the same day without hassle. Go! could get fussy and require another booking. I would call DL ASAP and get a more suitable flight.
As MisterNice said, DL won't care if you miss your connection since your flight to LIH is booked separately. As far as they're concerned, their obligation to you is done when they get you to HNL.
It may be too late since you're already booked, but if your tix are refundable, you might want to book it all via DL. They even have a LAX-LIH nonstop once a day.
Edit: You should also be aware that you will probably get your entire Go! ticket canceled and lose the payment if you don't cancel before the flight (i.e., probably before you even leave LAX). From the Go! website:
What happens if I do not cancel my reservation by calling the go! reservations center?
If a passenger doesn't cancel ahead of time, doesn't show up for a flight, or doesn't board the aircraft for any reason, his or her reservation will be automatically cancelled. Additionally, all remaining flights on that itinerary will also be cancelled and the passenger will forfeit the value of her or her reservation.

I second this. However, if changing flights on DL cannot work, to your advantage flying out of LAX into HNL does not have the risk of weather issues say like New York. This would assume that your a/c has not got bogged down somewhere else during the day.
I would recommend that you stay only with carry on if at all possible and if available OLCI for your Go! flight.

A delay causing a misconnect to a late go! flight happened to an acquaintance. I checked go!'s website and the flight was canceled earlier in the day. She didn't know the flight was already canceled, and when she called go! they made her pay to be rebooked on a flight the next day.
go! is an all around terrible airline.
Both airport hotels are pretty run down, but I'd probably go with the Ohana.
We’re stuck with the Delta tix – did NYOP on Priceline – knew it was a gamble. We lost all our ATA and Aloha miles last year. We only fly once a year for vacation on Kauai. If we get stuck in Honolulu for the night it’s OK – we will still be on vacation.
So if our Delta flight is delayed and I know we’ll miss our Go! connection cause we’re still in the air, how do I contact Go! to tell them we'll miss the flight – not supposed to use my cell phone in the air?
The go! flight was the last one out of HNL to LIH on any airline when I booked it. HA has now added a 9:45 pm flight. I know go! has a pretty bad rep – at least our LIH to HNL flight is on Hawaiian…
Still would like to know where to sleep at HNL if all else fails. Hawaiian has a 5:30 am flight to LIH the next morning. We might take it instead of waiting for the next Go flight which is way later in the morning.
Hopefully none of this will happen, but I want to be prepared.

The bags will check all the through to LIH, so we'll just have carry on. What is OLCI?
On-line check-in. Most airlines let you do it 24 hrs. before the flight. If Go! allows it, you'd be best off to do it before getting on your Delta flight from LAX. That way, if you're running close, they might be more likely to give you a couple of extra minutes to run to the gate.

If anything, that's a vast understatement.
go! also canceled a flight on me (last flight of the night, forcing an overnight). When I called them (from the plane in LAX) they said that the airline I was on from the mainland needed to do a printout showing that the flight was delayed. So, I had the gate agent do that and they didn't charge me the next day.
But that was 2+ years ago, and they may have changed their policy.

I can't speak to the Best Western, but since their renovation 18 months ago or so, the Ohana Airport Hotel is actually very decent for overnight. The rooms have all be re-done, the furniture is new, and it's clean. No complaints for a place to overnight waiting for the next flight. Their rates have dropped too.
The one near-airport hotel to avoid at all costs -- sleeping curled up in the gutter curbside at the airport would be preferable -- is the Pacific Marina Inn. It often comes up on Hotwire and is labeled a 2 star there.
If I arrive at HNL on Delta, then need to connect to a Hawaiian flight to OGG, and I don't have checked baggage, will I have to go on the other side of security to check in, then go back through security?
How much time should I allow for connection from the Delta arrival flt. to the departing Hawaiian flight?
