Thank You!
Just wanted to say thanks, as this thread was exceptionally helpful to me during my recent trip to Hawaii. I knew precisely what to expect, and everything was exactly as described.
Go! booked a hotel room for us so we will stay in HNL for free (hopefully). But we are thinking about booking an additional flight with Aloha or Hawaiian because they are much more reliable (at least we think that). We just booked go! because they had the only flight to Kauai leaving after 9pm.

Looking for guidance--transferring flights in HNL
We have several people who will be arriving HNL on AA and then changing to Go! Airlines flight to KOA. Assuming that AA can check our bags all the way through, can we use the Wiki Wiki to get to the commuter terminal? Trying to avoid having to go through security again.
Thanks, in advance, to the HNL experts out there!!!

You can take the Wiki Wiki shuttle or walk from the Overseas Terminal (AA) to the Commuter Terminal (go!) without having to go through security again: your choice. ( Assuming your bags have been checked through.)
If taking the Wiki Wiki shuttle, please inform the driver of your desire to go to the commuter terminal and request to be dropped off there.
If walking - sometimes an enjoyable "stretch" after a long flight - just continue all the way through the Inter- Island Terminal and down the escalator at Gate 62, and walk through the "tunnel" to the go!/Island Air reception desk in the Commuter Terninal.
Honolulu Airport Information - connection: International to Inter-island
My mother in law is flying from NRT to HNL on UA880. She is 75 years old, and neither speaks or understands English at all. At HNL she has to navigate through Customs, and find her way to Aloha Airlines check in counter for her flight to KOA. My wife and I will be meeting her later in the day flying to KOA separately on UA3. Questions:
A) How difficult will it be for a non-English speaking individual to get from international arrivals to Aloha check-in desk at HNL?
B) Looking at the maps available on-line for HNL, I see the Interisland Terminal and the Main Terminal. Where is Customs? Where is the International arrivals? Is everything located in these two terminals??
Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Call UA and advise them of the situation. The airline will make sure that a crew will be onboard that can speak Grandma's native tongue. In addition UA ground crew will know and might be able to get her assistance when she clears immigration.
Assuming she speaks Japanese, there are plenty of staff at HNL to help. That said, HNL isn't the easiest place to navigate -- but again, I noticed last week AQ staff helping a Japanese couple who didn't speak any English.
This thread is regarding connecting from mainland flight to interisland flight. My question is in regards to connecting from an international flight to an interisland flight. Is it a completely separate terminal? If so, what is the transportation system to the interisland terminal? The maps I saw on line do not indicate an international arrival hall, US Customs, etc. Thank You
Maybe this was discussed before but I did not find an answer for my problem:
We will arrive from LAX with Hawaiian at 8:30 pm. Because Go! changed the time for our connecting flight from 9:55 pm to 9:00 pm we will have only 30 min to get to the Commuter terminal to cath the plane. Although we can walk quite fast we wonder if this would be possible. Does anyone know about another possibility to get to Kauai after 9 pm? We will have a long journey from Germany and do not want to spend a night in an airport hotel.
All suggestions are more than wellcome!!!
Just a short update: We got an email from Go! that they cannot accomodate us because we booked separate tickets from LA to HNL and HNL to LIH. We will never book a flight with Go! again!!!
Unfortunately this is the risk you have anytime you book a trip using different airlines, on different reservations. If there is a delay or change in flight times with one flight, you're stuck.

Immigration & customs is in the domestic terminal (where all flights to/from the US Mainland arrive) and is closest to the interisland terminal. When you exit customs, take a left and the interisland terminal will be directly in front of you. If you're flying go!, you'll have to walk the length of the interisland terminal over to the commuter terminal.
There is also a WikiWiki shuttle that operates on the main road (outside security) that has a stop right in front of the international arrivals area. This shuttle can take you to the interisland and commuter terminal. But beware because the shuttle may not be frequent and if you're flying AQ/HA, it's probably better just to walk.
Could I make this connection?:
HA121 ITO-HNL (arr. 9:48)
UA879 HNL-NRT (dep. 10:28)
If HA can interline my bags, and the gates are close enough, it shouldn't be a problem. (although I don't know much about the typical weather delays, if any)

I have to take that 6:41am flight a lot (ugh) but I will say that even if YOU make the connection you're proposing (which is possible -- if you run) your inter-lined luggage will almost virtually certainly not.
It's a brisk 15 minute walk from the HA gates to the UA gates -- and that's knowing exactly where you're going. You could take the WikiWiki shuttle but it's going to end up being about the same amount of time.
Given the scarcity of seats right now due to AQ's and ATA's demise, I would not chance the connection you're proposing. You might find it's not easy to get another seat.

Thoughts?
That's not gonna work. It's an international flight. United requires you to be on-board the aircraft 30 minutes prior to departure else your ticket will be canceled (or at the very least, you'll lose your seat assignment). 10 minutes leeway is not enough for you to get from the HA terminal to Gates 6-10. No way, not even if you sprinted.
I think I got this right but thought I would post to be sure. Due to Aloha going out of business, I have rebooked our original itinerary as an open jaw for the family OMA-OGG, HNL-OMA on United and a separate ticket on HA OGG-HNL. The HA flight arrives at 346 on 12/31 and the HNL-ORD flight leaves at 525. My questions:
1. HA in OGG should be able to interline all the way to OMA on UA. Correct?
2. On 12/31 we should check in with UA online in advance. Correct? If so what do we say when it asks if we will be checking bags? Yes, I assume, even though we will be checking the bags with HA in OGG?
