I did hear back from CO and DL, both require a 75min connection time in HNL for baggage transfer. What happens if my scheduled interisland flight time is sooner than that? Will they refuse the check the bag thru, or just say, "we can't guarantee delivery"? A DL flight I'm looking at would have a 56min connection time, and a NW one 67min.

Jeff
This happened to me last year co->ha. On arrival at OGG, HA said the bags misconnected and would be on the next flight. They gave us the option of waiting or having the bags delivered. As the next flight was due in about 35 more minutes at that point, we got the rental car came back and picked up the bags.

I just called Northwest (surprisingly, got thru to an (US-based) agent in less than 2 minutes) who, after checking, confirmed that it's their official policy NOT to check baggage thru on separate tickets. She said that I could ask the counter agent when I'm checking in, but if don't want to gamble that a cranky agent early in the morning would say no. It's not worth the risk for me to have to pickup my luggage at HNL then recheck for an interisland flight, and reclear.

If someone has more definite information or experience, I'm all ears (for the next 3 days - by then I need to book my award tickets, either on CO, DL, or NW).

Jeff

First off, Northwest does not have any outsourced phone agents. All your calls are routed to one of the call centers within the United States.

Second, I have never heard of a situation where one was unable to check their bags through to their final destination in the Islands. It is, of course, your call to make. Best of luck with any of the carriers that you end up choosing.

Agree. I have encountered situations where the agent at a small United Express station didn't know how to do it (which I had anticipated and came half an hour early and brought a cheat sheet for the agent) but I've never heard of flatly being unable to.

I was actually speaking specifically with regard to interlining on Northwest flights to AQ/HA/go!, but it is worth pointing out that AA doesn't interline unless the min. connection time in HNL (can't remember it off the top of my head but it's on page 1) is met.

I'm planning to fly in from NRT before connecting to a SEA flight in mid January. I have a choice of arriving at 730 or 830. Not a U.S. citizen so it's going to be ugly waiting to cleaq immigration. Will it be ugly earlier or later? Thanks

Somewhat related to the previous interlining topic earlier in the thread. I'm flying HNL-NRT in march on NW.

Can/will HA interline to an international? The HA flight will be on a separate ticket if that matters.

I'm thinking if they can interline I'll give myself 2 hours for the connection and hang out in the club. If they can't I should bump that to 3 hours Thoughts?

My guess is that 7:30 is better. It all depends on when you actually land and what other internationals have arrived at the same time. I live in Japan and have passed through HNL immigration (too) many times. Fortunately, I'm a US citizen. I recommend being first off the plane and, if you have to catch a wiki-wiki, get on the first one. Five or so minutes saved there may save you 30 later on. Also, be aggressive like many of your fellow passengers will be while lining up. If you have 5 hours or more layover, you will definitely have time to get out of the airport. Four or less and it's going to be more difficult, though there is a small strip mall about a 5-minute walk away with a Starbucks, Jambo Juice, and a few restaurants. Nothing glitzy, but a break from the airport monotony.

AS Expansion

I know that AS will be announcing additional routes to Hawaii soon but you might want to add this to the top of the thread.

SEA-HNL
SEA-LIH
ANC-HNL

Thanks for all the great work!

In HNL, time from UA gates to InterIsland terminal

Is anyone familiar enough with HNL airport to know about how long it takes to walk/jog from the UA gates to the Aloha Airlines gates in the InterIsland terminal? I'm booking separate itineraries and would have a very close connection. I've seen a map of the terminals but don't really have a scale.

Also, if anyone takes UA 935, LAX-HNL regularly, does that flight ever/normally get in early?

This is covered in the Hawaii Forum FAQ:

http://flyertalk.com/forum/showpost....43&postcount=1

It depends on what time of year one is flying; flights to HNL from the mainland normally experience headwinds for the first portion of the trip and they can be stronger in the winter, IIRC.

Don't ever count on a flight arriving early.

As far as your inter-island terminal question, I felt it was too far to walk. I estimate the walk would take 20-25 minutes depending on your pace. We took the WIKI-WIKI shuttle which was relatively convenient and got us there in 15 minutes, plane-to-gate.

My rule flying UA: No less than 75 minutes between projected HNL arrival and interisland-flight time.

I've probably walked it 30 to 40 times and it's a long(er) walk than most would consider 'reasonable'.

I've actually timed it an found that at a brisk pace it takes about 15 minutes. That's the actual walking time, not including getting off the inbound flight. There are a few twists and turns in the main terminal which would tend to slow someone by a few minutes the first time through.

I believe MCT is 75 minutes for HNL and I'd say that is a fair estimate.

From the inter-island end, I routinely wait for the wiki-wiki shuttle. From the UA end they are just too unreliable - I walk it every time.

Walk feels good after after long flight. Also rather walk inter-island to rental cars.

We need more info: i.e. how close is your "very close connection"?

Will you interline your bags (check them all the way to your final destination?)
If you can do that, then you can stay airside (not have to go thru security again) all the way from the UA gates to the Interisland, so that may help save time.

I think you would want at least 45 minutes between flights and you need to move quickly (no bathroom breaks, Starbucks stops, etc, just hustle over) but others here may have different thoughts.

Good luck!
