Thanks to you and 'Bearcat06' for the replies on Shave Ice...if I find myself with a bunch of extra time, I might cab it...but I'll probably just play it safe and wait for my next time (not the next day when I head back to Washington then back to Maui , but the 'real' next time) to Hawaii.

Cheers,

If you like fresh fish, Nico's on Pier 38 is awesome.... It's small and you have to get there early in the day to get the lunch special because it's usually sold out by 1PM. He does serve breakfast and other stuff for lunch....and usually 2 specials for the day.

It's straight down Nimitz from the Airport as if you are heading to Waikiki.....probably a 10 min cab ride......depending on traffic. Hang a right at the Pier 38 sign and follow the signs in. It's literally right on the harbor.

Nico walks across the alley every morning and goes shopping for fish that just came off the boat.....and fixes it for the lunch specials.

Special is nice sized fish filet of some sort and usually a topping on it (like a garlic cream sauce), scoop of rice, and mac/green salad and a large drink (free refills) for 11 bucks. If you got the same thing in Waikiki you'd be paying 50 bucks......

You can eat outside in his covered area or on a table right next to the docks....and watch the fishing boats come in/out......

It was a truly hidden gem until Dinners/Drive-Ins/Dives showed up..... Damn tourists....

I go there 2-3 times a week......

I have. The beer is good (Firerock, FTW) and the food was surprisingly good as well. My gf and I shared a nacho appetizer and we were satisfied. It's a nice way to prepare for a five hour truck back to the mainland.

I usually sneak out and head to Dole to get a Dole Whip when I am having a bad day.....
There's also a small stand in the International Market near Waikiki that has it too.

Ala Mona Mall has a stand as well....

I'd much rather escape from work and head to North Shore.... hit Dole.....then hit Haleiwa and screw off there before swinging around and hitting H-3 and coming back to my side of the island....

Thanks to 'cblaisd' for the recommendation for the Ninja Sushi at the Airport Trade Center!

I stopped in on a layover during my MR through HNL on Tuesday and had great sushi (Ahi Lover Bento) for very cheap prices. It was so good that I bought some more for the flight back to the mainland (recommend the Hamachi and the Spicy Ahi Poke Nigiri).

Thanks again - looking forward to my next time through or in HNL!

chinatown food recommendations?

Any recommendations for chinatown food?
I have a 5hr layover and thinking of hopping on the BUS to chinatown, or aloha towers after reading through most of this thread. The layover is from 5-11pm on a Tuesday.

Thanks for any suggestions! I love that there is an entire thread devoted to this!!

Chinatown (near downtown Honolulu) or Dillingham is closer, but you still have the traffic issue. Hawaii has some of the best Chinese food in the country, if you like that. In the other direction, there are some decent places to eat in the Aiea/Waimalu/Pearl City area, but you still have the potential traffic issues.

When you are considering someplace good, what are your criteria? Oahu has some great hole-in-the-wall restaurants with great food, but are you looking for something fancier?

One of our 16-year-olds will have a 6.5 hour layover at HNL en route to HND next month, arriving around noon, departing 7pm.

We've heard lockers are available at the airport for the carry-on. Is this true?

This kid is a true foodie, but definitely on a tight budget. Also, no car. So Byron's seems to be a perfect choice. But what next?

USS Arizona comes to mind, but let's face it, this may not be at the top of a teen's "must do" list, even one as mature and intelligent as ours...

Diamond Head is a definite maybe, but a tricky knee can make things like hiking unpredictable. How strenuous is it?

Surfing is also a growing interest... perhaps there's a lesser-known spot for some great surfer-watching? One that can be accessed easily via The Bus?

We're open to the experts' recommendations here!

He doesn't have time via public transportation for either the Arizona or Diamond Head, imo.

I'd probably suggest TheBus to Chinatown as one doable option.

You can go to Youtube and look at some of the videos posted and judge for yourself. The steps are steep and that may be a factor. At least your son can decide if it's something he'd like to try. Question remains how to get back and forth from the airport. I can't imagine a 16 yr old not wanting to hit the beach in Hawaii.

Nevermind that the tickets to the actual Arizona memorial usually sell out around mid morning.

No luggage storage at the airport, unfortunately. If he is a member of an airline lounge, he might be able to "store" it there. It wouldn't be entirely secure and if you asked the lounge counter people about it they might say "no". I used to do this all the time at the old NWA lounge in HNL back and forth between Japan on hours long layovers. They had a nice little storage spot. That lounge is gone, so don't know if it's possible at other places. I might be just wasting your time bringing this up, but will post it anyway.

Hey all,

Tried getting my answer by reading the thread but couldn't really piece together a concise answer.
Will be arriving from LIH at 1:29 (on Go!...Hopefully) and have an 8:45 to the mainland. Would love to do the Arizona. If I rent a car and buy tickets NOW for the 2:45 boat.....can it be done?

Thanks

Doable I think. I've posted here about strategies for getting a rental car quickly at HNL.

Well, it turns out the USS Arizona is of greater interest than we expected...

Is the 18-26 minute estimate for getting between the Arizona and HNL on The Bus inaccurate? No idea whether this is realistic, but based on estimated travel time, considering the following itin:

12:20 p.m. - arrive HNL
12:55 p.m. - catch #20 (or the next one at 1:35 p.m.) - 18 min. est. travel time
2:45 p.m. - begin tour
4:25 p.m. - catch #20 back to HNL - 26 min. est. travel time
7:00 p.m. - departing flight

Alternatively, a taxi is not out of the question, but how difficult is it to get one back to HNL from Pearl Harbor?

They can be purchased in advance online.

Otherwise, any suggestions for the best beach for watching surfers? Relatively close to HNL and easily accessed by The Bus or taxi?
