NYC Area to Maui (OGG) - how best to get there

Change in our itinerary a bit. We want to spend some time in Kauai and then head over to Maui (ogg/jhm) and then fly back home from Maui
We were thinking of taking a one way trip to Kauai via United, which will be EWR-LAX-LIH. Spending some time in Kauai and then do a Hawaiian flight LIH-OGG. And then flying home OGG-SFO-EWR on Virgin. All of these are economy.
Thoughts? We would prefer leaving from EWR or LGA. We can do JFK as well, but a lot further away.
