A federal bankruptcy judge said Monday he will not stop Aloha Airlines from going out of business.
"This is a business decision -- I will leave it to the debtors to decide to withdraw their motion," U.S. District Court Judge Lloyd King said at the hearing in federal court in Honolulu.
As far as interisland, N830MH pointed out the things WN would have to do differently (lifejackets and all that), and WN has shown no interest in flying anywhere that requires modifications to its business model (no flights to Canada or Mexico, for example).
Could someone explain exactly WHAT WN would have to do differently for interisland service once they positioned a gaggle of their standard 737's in Hawaii? No ETOPS is needed for 30 minute flights, and WN 737's all have lifevests and floatable seat cushions "in the unlikely event of a water landing", even if they are the butt of many FA jokes as WN flies over deserts in the US.
U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Lloyd King said he is not going to stand in the way of Aloha Airlines' plan to shut down passenger service today.

"This is a business decision that has to be made by the debtor (Aloha)," said King.
King said as long as Aloha has make a good-faith effort to explore all the possibilities, he will not stand in the way of a shutdown. King added that no one has showed that Aloha did not make a good-faith effort.
I had tkt AQ ogg-sna AQ code share ord-hnl AQ hnl-ogg
for this summer booked via AMEX points. Called AMEX they cxld entire itenary and refunded points. Now I just have to build another itenary.
How can anyone stand in the way of shutting down when there is no $$$ for fuel or payroll.
From my understanding, the State was going to (1) provide necessary funding or (2) pass a law allowing the State to be liable for 90% of any loans extended to AQ by lenders.

OGG-SNA, ORD-HNL, HNL-OGG... uh... how were you getting from SNA to ORD? That's a bit of a walk.
If what you really want is OGG-ORD, and you don't have to stop in SNA, UA3 does OGG-KOA-ORD-OGG. I've been on the KOA-ORD segment before; pretty sure they're still using a 777.

Hawaiian Airlines said it will open its ticket counters at Honolulu International Airport at 4 a.m. tomorrow morning to handle an anticipated crush of passengers in the wake of Aloha Airlines' shutdown.
The air carrier, while saying it doesn't know what to expect, said it will open its vacant seats to people holding Aloha tickets for travel tomorrow. The carrier is adding extra flights to help handle Aloha passengers and will be honoring Aloha tickets on a standby basis for travel through Thursday.
Also from the 'tiser (different article), a bunch of hotels are trying to help out people who are stuck:
Starwood is offering a "distress rate" and adding concierge staff to help with rebookings.
Outrigger is offering special rates and discounts for AQ pax at 4 Ohana properties, 2 Outriggers and the Wyland in Waikiki, all Outrigger Condo collection properties and Keauhou Beach Resort.
Hilton is offering kama'aina rates to stranded AQ pax at the Hiltons, Doubletree Alana, Embassy Suites Waikiki Beach Walk, and Grand Wailea, and waiving no-show and cancellation charges today through Wednesday for people who had been booked on AQ.
Marriott is offering a 50% discount for up to 3 nights for stranded AQ pax who are current guests, and kama'aina rates for pax from other hotels who can't find rooms.

Aloha kakou
<mod hat on>
At a very pono suggestion by slippahs, I've split off the posts that have to do with the effects of AQ's demise on HA scheduling into their own thread The effects of the AQ shutdown on HA scheduling
The current thread can continue to focus more specifically on AQ -- and give a place for folks to lament and grieve

rebooked on Hawaiian, though I had to spend a LONG time on hold to get on a flight that didn't appear on the HA website. Collosal pain. Made me wish that they were only taking calls from people travelling this week. I have a AA flight from HNL to SFO in first that I absolutely didn't want to miss since I leave town again on 4/4 and have only 2 full days to see/take care of my pets.
Had a heck of a time getting on the HA website earlier today and was very grateful I got a ticket and am not forced into trying the standby option. When I finally got through the HA guy was nice and booked it over the phone when he couldn't pull up the availability online either. Will see how the airport goes tomorrow. Will post re: conditions if anyone is interested...

It is so sad because this was a carrier with a long history. It
has been a while since a US carrier who had been around for
a while, went under. I think TWA was the last casualty. For
me it does not make it easier when people say that management
made fatal mistakes. I miss them all. Even the one's I did
not miss while they were around, like EA. PA, TW, BI, WA, EA
and so many, many more and now AQ. What a hall of fame...
