Consolidated "Carry-on baggage allowance/weight on HA" thread

Aloha! The HA website says that you're only allowed one carry-on of the usual size, and up to 25 lbs (incidentally, the weight limit on mainland carriers is 40 lbs, iifc). But it mentions nothing of the additional "personal item," which usually serves (at least in my experience) as a euphemism for a bag of nearly the same size and weight as the main carry-on.

Does this mean you're strictly only allowed one carry-on on HA, and not a briefcase/laptop/backpack in addition?

Also, is there any distinction in the allowance between interisland and mainland flights, or between coach and first class?

When I did a search, I did find one thread reporting that a passenger's "excess" carry-ons had been checked, so I'd like to know what to expect. Thanks for your help!

CARRY-ON BAGGAGE:
Each ticketed passenger is currently limited to one piece of carryon baggage. Hawaiian Airlines operates the B767 aircraft between Hawaii and the mainland/South Pacific and B717 aircraft for interisland travel. Your carry on baggage should be no more than 45 linear inches, or 9"x14"x22" (L+W+H), and weight no more than 25 pounds.

The following items are not included as part of the carry on baggage limit.
- a handbag or pocketbook
- an overcoat or wrap
- a foot rug
- an umbrella or walking stick
- a camera and/or a pair of binoculars
- a reasonable amount of reading matter for the flight
- an infant's food for consumption enroute
- a collapsible wheelchair and/or crutches and/or braces or other prosthetic device on the same flight with passenger dependent on the device.

Your primary storage area is the space under the seat in front of you. The overhead compartments are on a first come, first serve basis and are for all passengers. If your carry on item is unable to be safely stored under the seat in front of you or in the overhead compartment, or if all storage areas are full, you may be asked to check in your baggage for pick-up upon your arrival.
When I used to fly Hawaiian frequently before I switched over to Northwest for my mainland long hauls, I never had a problem bringing a travel tote and a roller for my laptop, though things could have changed (this was nearly pre-9/11). The above states that you're allowed a personal item, though not nearly as generous as other carriers. I can't link the info above as it probably won't work, but you can find the same answer, accessing Hawaiian's help/FAQ system on their website:

For some reason, HA is rather strict with their weight restrictions. I had an inter-island flight from HNL to LIH, I knew I was going to check in a heavy bag, and even told the check-in agent the bag was overweight, and I'd pay the $25.00 fee. After doing so, she asked me to place my roll-aboard (which is small) on the scale. It weighed 30lbs, 5lbs over the limit. She insisted I either check it (which I couldn't due to a couple bottles of champagne, two champagne flutes, our wedding rings...etc.) and I even told her I was going to Kauai for my wedding. She wouldn't budge, and made me figure out how to lessen the weight. She insisted the bag was too heave and could fall and injur someone. I think a 25lb bag would hurt as much as a 30lb bag. So, I take out one of the bottles of champagne, and the 3 - 3 pack of camers and place them into my backpack. She fortunately didn't ask to weigh the backpack, since it probably weighed 40lbs.

Long story short... watch yourself, I think the airline is looking for ways to make additional money. Either that or there are some REAL square check-in agents at HNL.

Thank you both! The FAQs is where I'd gotten my original information, but--as you say, Slippahs--those are not exactly a "personal item" in the mainland sense of the word. In fact, I'm pretty sure you could carry all of those on as well as two carry-ons on AA or UA.

But thanks for the warning--looks like we should plan on checking more, and keeping fragile items in a small bag on the side.

OK! I admit, I always pack to much and usually my bag is quite heavy and when I'm doing the usual island hop from HNL-KOA or OGG-KOA or HNL-OGG, they always bust me for having my bag beyond the 25 lbs. limi and I am usually forced to pay for it.

But for traveling on the trans-pac flights I have never had a problem of bringing a roll-aboard and my messenger bag/laptop case/briefcase. My wife usually brings her roll-aboard and her purse (which is pretty big). We have never been given a hassle for that.

Be careful of the excess charges - they really like to get you on those.

Question Carry-on Weight Limit of 25 lbs - Question

In April my family and I are flying to LIH (CLE-ATL-HNL-LIH).
Coming into HNL on Delta (in F).
Connecting to HA 2 hrs later for the HNL-LIH flight.

Today I called to get seat assignments for my HA itin (award itin using CO miles).
The very friendly agent told me that each person's carry-on is limited to 25 pounds.

Is this carry-on weight checked at the boarding gate or landside?

Our return (LIH-HNL-ATL-CLE) will present a different issue...may have to obey.

Edited to add: Could not find anything on the HA website re the 25 lb carry-on limit.
However, the CSR was very explict: "Each pax is allowed one personal item and one carry-on that can not exceed 25 pounds."

THANKS

Unless this is new in the past two weeks, I've never had carry-ons checked for weight landside or airside on HA.

Wirelessly posted (slippahs' iPhone : Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5H11 Safari/525.20)

You might want to check the contract of carriage for the info on the 25 pounds. No worries though. You won't get checked.

I searched the website and found no info on this. Hope it's not a new change for 09.

Did you look exactly where I said to look above?

It is indeed in the CoC, like I said.

Hawaiian Airlines at Lihue Weighing Carry On - 25lb MAX

This is the first time I've ever run across this on any airline, let alone HA. When checking in bags LIH --> HNL they made me weigh my carry on bags and they had to be under 25lbs. At first my standard TravelPro was 29lbs, to which I removed some coffee, placed it in my backpack and stood back in line.

Second time around, when pressured, the guy said "All airlines have this policy, HA is the only one that enforces it". To which I politely smiled, commented I was a Delta PM, flew 100+ times last year and never heard of such policy, and thanked him for allowing my 26lb bag for "sliding".

I've never heard of, such a policy, but just a heads up to anyone flying HA, specifically from LIH. Probably just a power tripping counter agent, but none the less, with HA's new baggage policy, it could get expensive (my tickets were booked pre-new fees).

Aloha!

HA has started getting real picky about carryons.

Normally if you stay away from the counter or set your carryon in front of the counter where they can't see it if you are checking other bags you generally will get away without them weighing it. However they do have Gestapo agents that will always want to weigh it.

The other thing I have seen them do is walk around the waiting room on Mainland flights and force people to check baggage before they even find out how much will fit in the overhead. I have so far been successful at simply pulling the pink tag and going ahead and carrying on my bags.

As bad as USAir may be on the East Coast I have gone to flying USAir because they allow me to pick my seat (given status) on the internet and I have found a couple of seats that are great and are always held for preferred passengers.

With HAL if is a crapshoot at the airport. The Phx gate agents are sweethearts but the Hnl agents got hit by the mean stick when they were born. USAir also allows a 40 lb carryon.

Unfortunately in Jan I will need to go back to HAL for 5-6 months to get the Platinum miles.
