I am going to have my wedding reception at a Renaissance and wanted to make sure I maximize the points I can get for hosting the event.
Are there any tricks or bonuses for event planning?

Contact the events sales manager of that property and make sure you ask about receiving Marriott Reward points as an incentive. For a wedding party I would expect 10K min. but if it's a large wedding party I would expect more.
You can earn up to 50,000 bonus points for holding an event, including a wedding. Points are given out at 3 for every dollar spent. Here is a link with more details. There are tabs to the left for weddings and general information for all event planning.
