In a word - NO. Not worth a trip at all. If you're in the neighborhood and have a couple of days to spare, spend them in Tahoe instead. Much nicer setting and beautiful scenery.
Haven't sampled the gay life on my 2 trips to Reno, but have a good friend who lives there. From what he tells me, it doesn't sound very impressive.
As for the casinos and entertainment, if you're expecting Las Vegas lite, you'll be disappointed. Reno seems to attract a totally different clientele than Vegas - from what I could tell it skews older and less affluent. Think Branson with gambling.

I'd have to disagree with the Branson comment.. the gambling crowd is definitely different than Vegas.. as in, less trashy and more local / NorCal crowd. There's also a gay rodeo event in Reno.. annually, I think.
Other than gay ski week, there's nothing gay in Tahoe. Gambling options are pretty crappy there, too.
If you want gambling and a small gay nightlife/scene, then Reno will do.
If you want scenery and outdoorsy stuff, go with Tahoe.

No, no, no. Nothing there at all, gay or straight, based on my one visit. There are so many things you could do for a side trip with two days.
Carmel (not for gay scene).
Monterey (ditto).
Point Reyes (ditto).
LA (if you plan to fly, not drive).
Laguna Beach (ditto; big gay scene).
Palm Springs (ditto).

The gay scene in Reno was almost nothing when I was there. The town is pretty terrible. Going to Tahoe instead is a good suggestion (though not for the nightlife).

We've always joked that Reno is the white trash getaway, as it doesn't have the glitz or attraction of Las Vegas. I didn't take much note of the others around, but then again, I was with friends who don't gamble, so we did the nature thing and went to Tahoe.
No great gay reason to go there, but that may just be a matter of opinion and preference. I for one, don't care if I pass through Palm Springs ever again. (I dare them to take my card away).

I'd tend to agree. Reno area/Tahoe = spectacular, if you'd like to spend some time outdoors. Reno itself... not so much. Though they do have a lot of spectacular all you can eat sushi places! Amazing sushi in Reno, of all places...

If you enjoy the casino scene and like free drinks, RNO is ok. In that case I'd stay at the Atlantis. It is a nice, modern casino, unlike the others I have seen more downtown. It has a great sushi bar with an incredible all you can eat deal for lunch. Locals go there. There's also a gay neighborhood bar close by.
But if you're not into gambling, forget it. Also by buzzing over I suppose you mean fly. SWA has a non-stop route from SFO.
If you're looking for another very gay destination for a 2 day trip, I'd suggest PSP. And there's a casino downtown (though drinks are not free).

**: "most upscale," as the other posters have said, is absolutely, entirely relative. Never seen so much indoor neon in my life.

Skip the trailer trash heaven of Reno and opt for Tahoe instead.
No gay scene(think their one gay bar closed last year?)but you ain't missin anything in Reno either.
So unless it is all about gambling(and the Tahoe casinos are nicer/cleaner-but not as generous as Reno;s)head for the beauty of Lake Tahoe.

When my friend lived in Incline Village (we flew into Reno), we made our own fun at local bars.
But, overall, Tahoe and Reno aren't very exciting. I'd fly to Vegas instead.
