Interesting/exotic/quirky Cairo
My partner and I are headed to Egypt for 2 weeks. There will be a total of 4 nights in Cairo at the Conrad Cairo/Jaz Hotel and Casino. It is a nicer, but typical package, deal with 5 star river boats Lake Nasser/Nile, Luxor/Aswan, etc. But, I am calling all old or new Egypt friends/family to connect me with interesting out of the way/typically unseen architectual or food venues in Cairo, e.g., crumbling Ottoman palaces done over, quirky neighborhoods, etc. Given the strange gay life in Egypt, I am not looking specifically for a "gay only" Cairo, but I want the gay sensibility and vision for the cool things in Cairo. Thanks a heap!

Dine at the Windsor Hotel. The dining room is up on the second floor. As taken from the website: Built at the turn of the last century as the baths of the Egyptian royal family, the Windsor served for many years as a colonial British officers club... I was in Cairo last year and lunch at the Windsor was memorable and eclectic.
We stayed at the Oberoi Mena House, in the shadow of the pyramids. If you have a chance, walk through and have a drink there.
I traveled through Egypt with a gay group. There were about 20 of us. Our Nile River boat was just for our group, a turn of the 20th century steam powered paddle wheeler, originally the royal yacht. We did not have any problems at all anywhere in Egypt. Have a wonderful trip.

Now, that's a great start, and a quick GLBT response, and spot on as to what is quirky/eclectic and with promise of fabulous. Thanks.

The current (and only) gay meeting place is the beer garden at the Marriott. It's a pleasant enough place to have a drink in the evening, but the main draw is the fascinating people watching. Lots of expats and tourists from Europe and other Middle Eastern countries, and some wealthy or alternatively "enterprising" locals.
