Berlin for New Year's

Hello all,

I am heading to Berlin with friends for New Year's (total of 5 nights). I may be the last person who has not visited Berlin yet, so I am looking for input concerning things to do and places to go to.

We will be staying in Berlin-Mitte, at Melia Berlin. I hear that the city is huge, with no clearly defined "gay" neighborhood -- can anybody suggest some gay bars/clubs worth going to? Mostly looking for chillout places, with good music and atmosphere, not necessarily the loudest techno clubs in town.

Also, I know that there is a huge street party for New Year's eve. Are there any gay parties/festivities taking place that night? We think we'll end up somewhere indoors for the night, but with so many options available, it's hard to know which place to choose.

Thanks a lot!

I have been to Berlin several times but never over New Years I am afraid.

This is an online guide produced by the local gay mag.
http://www.out-in-berlin.com/ It is in both German and English.

The two main 'gayborhoods' are Schöneberg around Nollendorf Platz/Wittenberg Platz U-Bahn stations and Prenzlauer Berg by Schönhauser Allee.

It would be easier to point you in the direction of stuff if you said what interests you. The bar and club scene ranges from the hippest of hipsters to some of the some of the kinkiest bars I have ever stumbled out of at 10am blinking into the morning sunshine.

For online calender listings of what's on at the various clubs, bars, theaters, etc., including one-off parties, visit:
http://www.siegessaeule.de

Or:
http://berlin.gay-web.de/

And in addition to the two gay areas already mentioned, Kreuzberg has a reasonable gay scene, although it's a bit more dispersed. Several of the better nightclubs in town are to be found there, particularly SchwuZ (short for SchwulenZentrum):

Oh, and SO36 hosts of a range of concerts and dance nights (not all gay), including the famous Gayhane party (one of the coolest and most unique gay nightclub experiences to be had anywhere):
