Boom? Guess you haven't been to Minneapolis lately. BOOM! closed forever in September 2006.

Let's update MN to reflect the bars that are far more popular than Boom ever was:

MN > Minneapolis > The Saloon > ^^^^^
MN > Minneapolis > Minneapolis Eagle > ^^^^

In NYC, it's not surprising that Splash is top rated (it's EVERY out-of-towner's first stop), but I think it's surprising that The Townhouse rated higher than most places in Chelsea. It's got to have something to do with the FT demographic. If you asked me who the typical customer of The Townhouse was I'd say 'Jolly older gentlemen wearing bow ties and holding a gallon size glass of vodka/rocks'. I'm just sayin......

Actually, never been there...

Forgot to explain another thing... The list is a summary of bars recommended on this thread... I didn't create the popularity index randomly... The number of thumb-ups is equivalent to the number of times the bar was mentioned favorably on this thread...

Hmmm, I was just thinking of heading there next weekend to "check it out"... Twin Peaks @ SFO, Tropics @ FLL, Windows @ DCA... So I just got to add that to my list...

No one has said The Quest in my old stomping ground of Birmingham, AL. Somehow I am not surprised though. Haha.

Anyone actually ever been there, just out of curiosity?

Gay bars
As The Orlando Sentinel noted in a recent article, around the country gay bars have been going out of business as gay men and women have been gaining greater acceptance in society. What used to be a hangout for people who felt unwelcome elsewhere is becoming less necessary.

Odds of survival in 10 years: As with many industries, the very best of them will endure; the rest won't.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20873711/

That is absolute crap, at least down here in the South. Gay Clubs and Bars are to the gay community what churches are/were to the African American community; a place where people can get together and share in a sense of community that they can't outside the in the real world.

Often times, especially in the south, the gay clubs are all we have. They are the only places we can be openly gay and act on those feelings without having to worry about being called names or beat up. Even in Austin (which is better than it is in much of Texas), there are many straight clubs that won't give the homo's anywhere near the latitude that they give the straights in terms of dancing on the stages, making out etc.

Rain, OCH, Rainbow, are FAR superior to just about any straight club here in Austin. The drinks are stronger, the music is better, the boys (and girls) are usually cuter, and we do it all with a sense of class. The main straight clubs here are just so trashy and nasty and so poorly kept up.

There are several straight clubs near my apartment and all I ever hear about is shootings and knifings. My God, when was the last time you ever heard those things happening in a gay bar? The worst I've ever seen is a vicious face slapping...

My favorite is Linga Bar in Siem Reap Cambodia. Shameless promotion for my partner's gay brother who owns the place. Aside from that it really is a pretty cool place if you find yourself in this neck of the woods. His name is Martin. If you go, tell him Sid sent you.

Oh yes! I went there a few times in the early 90s when I was living in Bham. I recall seeing my first drag queen there, I think her name was Liberty Bell.

My favorite place in Birmingham was Club 21 on Thursday nights... it's long gone though.
