Thanks all. I plan to do 3 nights Cologne, 3 nights Munich. I've actually been to Salzburg before, so don't imagine I'll do it again. I'll be coming from 3 nights in Mykonos, so clubbing is not the main goal of this part of the trip.

Yes, Monchau looks nice but there are hundreds of places like this.

I was thinking a bit about the trip and I may suggest the following:

Stay two nights in Cologne, it is enough to see the city. What is important in Cologne is the cathedral and the relevance of the catholic church. But, for my opinion, the most meaning of Cologne is the roman influence 2000 years ago. In Cologne you may understand that Rome was not only the nowadays city in Italy but it was the world.

After two days and hopefully good nights in Cologne I would take the high speed train ICE down to Heidelberg. Heidelberg is the classy american tourist place in Germany. And I like it too. Stay two nights at the Hotel Ritter and enjoy this wonderful university city in the summer.

Heidelberg is nearly half way to Munich.

In Heidelberg it is a must to drink a few beers in the famous Seppl.

It is a sort of student´s bar still frequented by members of fraternities.

Give us a feedback what you did at the end.

Gay Pride

Sorry for being late in replying, but as you are heading to Germany in July, have you checked out the Gay Pride/CSD dates? In Munich it's July 4 - 12 (with most of the action (Strassenfest and Parade) during the last weekend. Cologne is usually a week earlier

Germany beyond Berlin

thanks I'll be traveling postpride/CSD, which I've found can actually be better for getting a good sense of a city!

Munich has a rather interesting 4 story hotel/sauna/bar/restaurant complex.

As a hotel, the Deutsche Eiche is a good three-star, but it is somewhat overpriced in high-season. We have stayed there several times over the years. The location is very good, in a very nice, and central area. The restaurant is a typical German Kneipe. We will eat there, even though we prefer to stay a bit cheaper, and less central four-star this summer.
