Question Music/cd-shops In Frankfurt?

OK; I know that I probably am somewhat old-fashioned, wanting my music on hardware, i.e. CDs. As my musical taste tends to run to quite odd classical music, particularly opera, availability for downloading what I want is very restricted in any case.

Living in the Norwegian provinces, I tend to do most of my CD-shopping online or when travelling. Favourite shops in Germany include Beck in Munich and Dussmann in Berlin.

I tend to pass through FRA quite often, but I don't know the city well at all, and I do not know about any music/CD-shops. As I have a longish stop-over coming up in FRA (~5 h), I plan on going into town. Knowing that even smaller cities in Germany can support well-stocked specialist shops for classical CDs (e.g. Ruth König in Kiel), I expect that there must be someplace having a good selection of classical music in Frankfurt. Alternatively: some department stores in certain German cities (Karstadt in NUE, KaDeWe in Berlin) are also to be recommended for classical music, but my prime requirement is for a specialist dealer. Neighbouring cities on the S-Bahn from FRA (Mainz, Wiesbaden) could also be of interest.

Does anybody have a tip?

I don't know the locations in FRA but downtown you should at least find:

Saturn (big electronic department store)
MediaMarkt (big electronic department store)
Karstadt
Kaufhof

Maybe even

WOM (World of Music) = (just CDs and DVD/VHS)

I guess locals can give you even more advice or guide you towards unique non-chain stores.

Thanks for the answer.

In my experience, neither Saturn nor WoM tend to have a worthwhile selection of classical music. Kaufhof and Karstadt varies very by branch. Some Karstadts (NUE) are very good, others (MUC) only have a few bestsellers. I have never visited MediaMarkt. Are they any good for classical music?

The one chain store that in their major branches have a good classical selection is Müllers Drogeriemarkt. Do they have a branch with classical music in Frankfurt?

Media Markt is worse than Saturn in that respect. You'd be wasting your time.

Try ZWEITAUSENDEINS (Am Kornmarkt 14). It's easy to reach from Hauptwache.

An Update

I didn't get into downtown Frankfurt a year ago, but last week I had a quick stopover and visited CDs am Goethehaus. I did not have time to go to the other two shops recommended, but from the respective webpages, CDs am Goethehaus seemed the most worthwhile for my musical interests.

The selection was good for classical, even if the selection was more on recent releases than a huge backstock. Recommended; I will definitely return.

As for the Karstadt in Nuremberg that I have "recommended" myself earlier in this thread, the recommendation does not stand anymore. There is no proper selection there anymor, probably due to changed circumstances (bankruptcy). BTW they did not stock any model trains there anymore either...

Phooey! I must have walked right by CDs am Goethehaus last night. Anyway, the place would have been closed when I was there. Sigh ... next time! (Either that or I'll go to VIE or SZG for my obscure classical CDs.)
