Actually, if the OP'S assets are in US Dollars, German food priced in Euros will be a good deal.

Reagrdless, the OPs choices are food in the airport or food outside the airport - either way will be in Euros, and there are far more budget dining options in the City of Frankfurt than at FRA.

As Nacho and Alex71 noted above, the supermarket at the train station has a selection of deli stuff for long layovers, big delays, overnights at the airport hotel before early morning flights.

Warning - The currywurst sandwich mit fries is a bad idea before a long flight unless you enjoy developing the capability to produce more wind than a September hurricane. Citation: personal unfortunate experience.

Another inexpensive place that comes to mind, if you are just looking for a sandwich or a salad, is Scoom http://www.scoom.de/. If I'm not mistaken, they have freshly made sandwiches for around 3 EUR and prepackaged sandwiches for under 2 EUR.

Generally, prices airside and on the departure level are higher than prices of places near the train stations (either at the "Airport City Mall" above the regioal train station or at the "Squaire" above the long distance train station).

The advantage of the Squaire is that it is a large office and hotel building with a large covered atrium, that provides comfortable seating away from the busy terminals. Might be a good place to grab one of the sofas for a few hours. http://www.thesquaire.com/en

The fraport canteen is in T2, which sells warm food at lunch for 'normal' prices. Very tricky to find though

Can anyone buy food there? Or they do staff/non-staff price? In HKG, all the canteens are staff only AFAIK (you need a batch to get into the canteen).

If you are serious, it's terrible advice. It happens again and again that the refund takes 2-3 weeks, which means that you're stuck floating this amount for LH. Aside from that it's an extremely d-bag thing to do.

For a couple of Euros you can take the S-Bahn into town. Go to the Fressgass (ask) and you'll find plenty to eat there.

An S-Bahn ticket would cost 4.55 EUR one way. It should be possible to find food at the airport for less than 9 EUR. Nevertheless, it would be a good use of time to get into Frankfurt.

Agreed. It is nearly impossible to starve at FRA. There are plenty of places where you can but a Leberkäs Brötchen (sandwich) for a few Euros. Personally I'd head into town for lunch at L'Unico, but that's a different story.

there is Mcdonalds and tons of other food places in the airport center, you can also go to the fernbahnhof and go to Rewe super market which sells cheap hot food. Same goes for Teegut in the Airport Center. There are dozens of places where you can lots of stuff for under 5EUR

They have staff/non-staff pricing. Staff price applies if you use your badge to pay for your food. Of course they don't expect the general public to show up there.

Maybe there is a nice Flyertalker who could guest you into a lounge that day? Unfortunately, we won't be there at all this year but someone might be. Although the food isn't always fabulous, I remember having a really good Frankfurter in the LX business lounge (maybe it was LH, can't remember.) Had to try it just because it seemed like the right move at the time, eating a Franfurter in Frankfurt! I was very glad that I did. I am normally not a hot dog conoisseur, but this one was really good.

As a second option, heading to the city would be a great decision also.

11 hours in a lounge in FRA? No thanks. Not even the FCT is that nice. You'd go mental.
