Where to pick up rental car for southern Bavaria?

We will be staying in Fussen and Berchtesgaden during a visit to Bavaria. We are arriving by train from Berlin. I don't know where to pick up the rental car! I am concerned that the Munich train station will be too confusing to drive from since I would like to avoid the stress of driving in an unfamiliar city. Are there locations in other cities nearby or on the outskirts of Munich that are convenient to public transit from a train station? Thanks for any insights!

Which is your preferred rental company?

I don't have a preference. I generally use Auto-europe and they assign me to a company like Europecar or Hertz.

I just had a look for Europcar. München West seems to be not too far from the S-Bahn Station Pasing (well, within the city but not downtown).

Where do you have to drop off your car and where are you going first? There is a Europcar station in Freilassing, that is on the German side of the border next to Salzburg. Maybe, you might consider going by train to Salzburg/Freilassing. In case your train does not stop in Freilassing, just go back one train station. Pick up your car, go to Berchtesgaden, then to Füssen and drop off your car - lets say - on the Hauptbahnhof in München or the Airport.

Hertz seems to be pretty much the same.

Hertz Freilassing is even closer to the Station, I know the owner, they are really nice.

Munich Ostbahnhof is also an option, the A8 highway is easy to reach from there. Pasing is on the other end of Munich, getting to the A8 from there is tricky.

Thank you! Freilassing looks like the perfect option for me. I think I will drop the car at the munich airport where we are spending the night before our flight home to avoid driving in the City.

Sixt have a station at the main station "Hauptbahnhof". If you rent a car with GPS, you shouldn't have any problems. In my opinion, Sixt are the best car rental people in Germany.

Sixt in Freilassing

The Sixt location that is near the train station appears to be located some distance from the train station when I use google maps to locate it. Hertz seems to be located right in front of the station. I'd like to use Sixt but I don't want to have to walk 1/2 mile or so to reach them.

None of the rental companies have cars right at Hbf in Munich. IIRC they all have desks in the station but the actual cars are a block or tw away. With a map or a GPS device it's pretty easy to get out of town from there.

THanks. I should have been more specific. I meant to refer to the Sixt rental location at the Freilassing train station.

Hertz is also a bit away, don't be fooled by google maps, you have to exit on the south side of the tracks. Sixt is even farther away. I know Hertz will deliver the car to Station for a fee (5-10€), Sixt may do the same. So make a call to the local office to check with them. Alternatively if you are a party of two, leave your partner and luggage at the station and you make the 'hike' your self and return to the station to pick him/her up
