March 2012 T100's (onboard loads)

Here are onboard loads for Frontier and select MKE competitors for March 2012. As always, remember that loads are only half the picture when trying to guess relative financial performace as they say pretty much nothing about fare or traffic composition.

March generally should be the month that things really come to life, and sunbird flights should be packed. Only filling about 55-65% of seats in TYS-MCO, MCI-TPA, DSM-TPA is a real disappointment. TYS in particular is even worse that it might appear as there were a few hundred thru passengers occupying seats traveling from Orlando to Denver via TYS. Without those passengers TYS-MCO would have registered 42.2% full. Those through passengers also boosted TYS-DEN numbers by 6.3 percentage points.

Without thru passengers between Denver and Washington, here's how local traffic looked on MSN and GRR flights to/from DCA:
10.3% Grand Rapids (14.3 local passengers per flight)
27.3% Madison (37.7 local passengers per flight)

Knope, thanks as always for the numbers.

I am shocked at the catastrophic lows on DCA-MSN and DCA-GRR.

It makes one wonder what kind of research F9 considered before launching those routes.

Maybe that's why GRR-DCA was pulled. It looks like MSN-DCA is doing fairly well, now, especially without any nonstop competition. What will happen, if the E190 is no longer available to serve the route? Frontier has been promoting itself as having an all Airbus fleet. Can an Airbus support the route?

Frontier is an all Airbus, Republic has the E190 as prorate. Sometimes details get lost in the message

It will be interesting to see if Frontier (stand alone) will want Republic to fly for them once Frontier has a majority holder, if that ever happens. I can't get a handle what direction Frontier management wants to go. But if Republic agrees to continue to fly prorate for Frontier I would guess the E190's would stay as long as they make money.

I am well aware of that.

The question was if an only Airbus fleet were available to fly for Frontier, could the smaller markets, like MSN, support that kind of capacity?

The only smaller markets that could support an Airbus fleet would be flights to either Florida destinations and to Denver to connect to other flights. Even at that the flights probably would only be a few times a week, no chance it they could be daily (and make money). Frontier is heading toward the Allegiant style of flights for small markets, which is non-daily flights. I wouldn't be surprised if Republic sells or leases the DCA slots to another airline.

Considering that Durango/Denver was only 62%, I'm still wondering about what research they have that shows Durango/Las Vegas will be successful.
