Won a trip to Houston for the BIG12 football championship by Chick-fil-a. Coming up next month. The funny thing is, I was trying to win the free nuggets (never did) and didn't even realize this was one of the prizes. Sometimes ignorance is bliss?

Won a Thrifty Car Rental Voucher
Email I got today...
Dear outoftown,
Congratulations! You have been selected as a prize winner in the WorldPerks Wings and Wheels Game, administered by ePrize.
You have won a $40 Thrifty Car Rental Free Day Voucher. You will be receiving your voucher in the mail 6-8 weeks after the end of the promotion. It will be mailed to the address you provided on the registration form. The promotion ends on December 15, 2005.
Your win has been automatically approved. No further verification is required to claim your prize.
How were you contacted. Sometimes they ask for a telephone number....I don't want to give that out. If they contacted me by e-mail as they did you Outoftown, I probably would think it is SPAM.....you know, along the lines of a Nigerian Billionaire just died and so they contacted me....

I'm used to getting at least one message a day from Nigeria or the UK about lotto winnings or transferring large sums of money where they need my help. Also used to dealing with phishing ploys from banks, mortgage companies, credit cards, ebay and paypal as well as ebay escrow or Western Union wire transfer scams, pyramid schemes, etc. I think I'm too street smart for that. I even consider United Way a long running scam. Since the email I received had my exact email address and addressed a contest that I had entered and didn't ask for any additional information or a reply, IMHO I think it's legit. Just want to add too that while searching for travel-related contests to post here, I run across many contests that are "farming" email addresses for advertisements or spam. I will not knowingly post any contest that is not associated with a legitimate product or service. I avoid dedicated contest websites because many resell email addresses with your demographic information (if you don't believe me, try pch.com) or that may require anything beyond the normal registration information, unless they have opt-out choices. I enter every contest I post here (except the Canada only ones, of course!)

Contact depends on the promoter supervising the sweeps. Each one seems to have it's own favorite way of doing things. I've gotten a phone call (Home Depot $1,000 gift card); email (Las Vegas trip) and regular letter (UA frequent flyer miles.)
If you don't want to give them your phone number, and you don't open your email (the spam-looking stuff), then it's probably pointless to enter. The promoters aren't going to chase you down to try and give you a prize. They'll just move on to the next name in line.
