Bring beef jerky into Europe
 

I know that U.S. Customs will not let you bring meat products into the U.S.

We're spending the month of September touring France, Germany, and the Benelux countries.

My wife is still nervous about Hoof and Mouth, and Mad Cow disease. Does anyone know if she would be prevented from bringing Beef Jerky from the U.S. into those countries?

It's not a problem to bring meat products into France or Germany.

If you are nervous about eating meat in Europe, and feel better bringing it from home, do it .

But it's not necessary.
The "hoof and mouth" disease was located in UK, there was only a few cases in the same location in France with imported animals.
Now the problem is completely solved in continental Europe (I don't know for UK).

For the "mad cow" disease, the checks were made very carefully.
Each time a case was found, all animals living at the same place were killed.

I think, meat products are safe in Europe now.
But, again, if you don't feel secure, you can choose steakhouses selling beef from Argentina etc.

Actually, I have no problems with European beef - I'll be enjoying it. It's my wife who is nervous.

Chetney, every time I come back from the U.S. I bring back all sorts of beef products into Germany (canned campbell's soup, beef jerkey, salami). In fact, Germany even has a specific duty free allowance for fresh meat - 1 kg IIRC!

England might be a bit stricter because it's an island (not sure about that).

Foot and Mouth doesn't affect humans. BSE (Mad Cow Disease) potentially does.

In some of the bigger cities (e.g. Frankfurt), restaurants will advertise that they use Argentinian beef. Also, for slightly more, you can even get a steak made of horse http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...orum/smile.gif.
