1. If an Ivory member makes a qualifying flight within the 20 months, are the previously obtained award miles (ie those ontained at the start of the 20 month period) extended?
2. As a Platinum member, is there a time limit on using my award miles?
Thanks.
I have read through a fair bit of this thread and looked at the T's & C's but can't get a clear answer.

My miles expire in a few weeks, but I have been sent an email saying I can buy miles at the moment with a bonus.

So my question is... if I were to buy the maximum mileage possible for 1000 Euros a couple of days before my 'flying miles' expire... would I lose them and not be refunded my 1000 Euros? If so then there should be a BIG health warning if you intend to buy Miles!

No, you would lose the miles you buy in 20 months if you did not use them. Just now, any miles older than 20 months, whether flown or not, will expire.. unless used before. That's how I understand it, and that seems to be how it has worked on my mother's expiring account.

Thanks Concerto

But what a bizarre FF scheme. Why would anyone apart from extremely frequent flyers ever join?

It is well know that the majority of FF members will save their miles over periods of much more that 20 months to get the balances they need to go traveling (either because they want to burn on l/h or because they want to take F&F with them).

Seems to me that AF/KLM do not want any 'bread and butter' Y business, only people that will fly their premium cabins. If that is so why not go the whole hog and strip out Y completely?

The number/crunchers will tell us that the Y passengers are needed to fill the a/c and pay for the basics, the premium passengers produce the profits. But if they alienate the Y passengers... they'll have to raise premium fares and they could end up in a 'doom loop spiral' downwards.

As I said above... what a BIZARRE FF scheme!

I think you got it wrong here. No miles at all will expire provided you take at least one SkyTeam flight every 20 months.

From af.com:
As a Flying Blue member, you can maintain your Award Miles for life, simply by taking one flight* every 20 months on AIR FRANCE, KLM, Air Europa, Kenya Airways or Aircalin, or on any SkyTeam member.

* Must be a Miles-earning fare flight

Indeed...a good choice of word.

Looks as if my and my wife's accounts will zero out by end of next April. I can't see us taking a flight just for the fun of it to keep the miles active.

Adios FB.

Likewise.... what is the point? I think the thing that a lot of FF schemes recognise is that there a many people (e.g. yours truly) who travel a lot but whose patterns change over time. So some months/years I will fly a lot on routes where I am happy to go with my main FF schemes (in my Case OW and *A). But sometimes I have a choice. To get me to go on Skyteam... I have to be able to see the benefits.

And if I see no benefits... I may look at other options, including routing via *A and OW even if it means a connecting flight!

So does FB want me to spend a lot of money on premium clases when I do fly (though I might not do that within each 20 month period) or ignore me as a customer (and potentially reward with miles someone who flies more often... but on cheap Y tickets).

Still think FB is a bizarre scheme.
