Considering Tri-Rail MIA-Delray Beach

I'm actually considering canceling my car rez but before I do I figured I check in with the experts,

So am I crazy or if this really is a viable option, are there any tips you can offer to make the trip as smooth as possible?

Arriving MIA on UA Wed Feb 4 @ 1PM (after a 27 hr Mileage Run which is 1 reason why I'd rather not drive )

Leaving MIA on UA Wed Feb 11 @3:30 PM

thanks

You need to purchase tri-rail ticket before boarding into the trains. You have show your ticket while security guard is inspector the tri-rail ticket. You can look it up www.tri-rail.com to do search the fare whatever where you want go there.

If your only use of Tri-Rail would be for the MIA-to-Delray and Delray-to-MIA trips (in other words, if you will not be needing local transportation during your time in the Delray area), then this is certainly do-able.

Tri-Rail is commuter service that runs most of its service to during Monday-Friday commuting hours. Since both of your airport trips seem to fall within those parameters, Tri-Rail use is a viable option (do remember to check schedules on the website).

However, if you need to go places during your visit, then you will be limited in your travel options may want to re-think not renting the car.

Another option is to take Tri-Rail to Delray, and pick up your rental car in the Delray area after you have had a chance to catch up on your sleep.

Its very viable. I've done it a few times from both FLL and MIA. IMO, MIA is an easier connect because the station is so close. Just take a look at the shuttle information on their website to make the transfer as easy as possible.

I almost prefer Tri-Rail over driving in South Florida. Traffic can get pretty bad down there sometimes.

Thanks all!

I looked at the Tri-Rail and MIA website and it was hard for me to figure exactly where or maybe more important, how far the shuttle to the train is from the UA terminal?

Also, does the Ticket Vending Machine take credit cards or require specific cash denominations?

and yes, I'll get picked up at Delray and know where I can get a car if I later decide to but I understand and appreciate the heads up!

The shuttle stop is in the middle of all the concourses near the short term parking lots.

The TVM's take credit cards and denominations of $20 and less.

i think traveling on weekdays on the tri-rail is better. when i took it from FLL-PBI it was on a weekend and it only comes every hour. Make sure you check the schedule. It's a pretty good mode of transportation and cheap!

Turns out UA runs out of J which is a schlep to the shuttle stop (outside of E)

as a data point, the TVM doesn't take AMEX. and holds on to your card for a tad longer than expected. Plus, there's another machine at the station and also the possibility of a live ticket clerk.

these days in the middle of the day it runs hourly and increases to every 30 mins during AM & PM rush. Weekend trains run every 2 hours.

My shuttle and train were right on time today, however, the southbound trains were running a delay of @ 30 minutes

Enough time to make flight from Tri Rail?

I need to get from Delray Beach to MIA on a Saturday. My UA flight departs MIA at 2:30pm. If I take Tri Rail leaving Delray Beach at 12:27pm and get on Bus 133 and arrive in MIA at 1:52pm, is that enought time to make my flight? No checked luggage. I'm hesitant to take the next earlier train, since it's 2 hours earlier. Thoughts & suggestions?

At MIA, you want to be there at least one hour beforehand. Plus, there are delays on tri-rail quite often. I would not chance it? Can you make your flight? Yes, if EVERYTHING goes your way - Tri rail on time, bus on time, no traffic, already checked in, no long security lines. One of those goes awry and you are out of luck.

Thank you pbiflyer. I'll take the earlier Tri Rail and not cut it so close. Too bad there isn't a lounge I can use in Terminal J.
